Work is underway to ensure road studs – or ‘cat’s eyes’ as they are more commonly known – are in good working order as the longer nights draw in.
Each year, Island Roads conducts a full, Island-wide, survey of cat’s eyes to identify those that need replacing.
Following this survey, a programme of replacement work is being planned for the coming weeks. Most of the work will be done at night in order to reduce disruption although there will be short-duration road closures put in place so the necessary work can be completed as swiftly and as safely as possible.
Signed diversions will be in place during these road closures.
An Island Roads spokesperson said:
“I am sure residents will understand the need for these short-duration road closures but we would like to thank residents in advance for their co-operation and understanding if their journey is affected.
“We do hope that by working predominantly at night we will be minimising inconvenience for residents.”

These will be essential on the back roads of foggy Chale and Niton now that Black Gang Chine will be used for nighttime activities as Robin Hill is closing down, I can envisage problems arising from that decision with extra traffic on roads that aren’t suitable after dark.
it’s not Blackgang Chine it’s for the carpark activities at the top of the hill that’s used for late night dog walkers that stand around in the fog at the car park
Try getting the pot holes fixed first. They are more of a hazard than missing cats eyes.
why shut the road just to see if the cats eyes are ok you can do that by just driving down the road at night. give me £15hr plus fuel and i will do for them. i bet they have a D/H walking in the road with a light. (that’s ok that’s ok that’s not that’s ok)
The council has called in the vets.
Wish the council would re-instate the central white lines on the roads that have been resurfaced.
Many have come out, lying in the road
