A new recovery setting on the Isle of Wight is offering an alternative approach for individuals who feel the need to change their relationship with alcohol, but are unsure how to take the next step.
Shanklin-based Somerton Lodge has been developed to support those whose drinking may not appear problematic from the outside, but who internally feel a growing need for change. Many continue to manage work and responsibilities, yet find alcohol taking up more mental space, with attempts to cut down proving difficult to sustain.
The Lodge provides a smaller, more discreet environment for recovery, designed to bridge the gap between independent efforts and more traditional rehabilitation settings, which some may find too clinical or disruptive.
Its calm setting on the Isle of Wight allows individuals to step away from familiar routines and pressures, creating space to focus fully on recovery.
Somerton Lodge offers both medically supported alcohol detox, delivered in partnership with a CQC-registered clinical provider, and structured stays focused on stabilisation and reset. The common factor among those attending is recognition that their current environment is not supporting lasting change.
The approach centres on structure rather than pressure. Each day follows a clear and manageable routine, combining guided work, reflection and practical tools aimed at helping individuals better understand their behaviours and stabilise emotionally. The focus is on clarity and support, rather than confrontation.
Work completed during a stay is supported by established recovery frameworks and published materials developed over a number of years.

These resources have reached more than 30,000 readers worldwide and form part of the ongoing support individuals can take with them after leaving.
Those completing a stay leave with a clearer understanding of their patterns, practical tools to continue their progress, and a structured plan for returning to everyday life. There is also the option to continue support through an online recovery platform, helping individuals maintain progress and stay connected after their time at the Lodge has ended.
Somerton Lodge has been developed by John Elford, an author of multiple recovery publications used internationally.
For those unsure about what kind of support is needed, confidential conversations are available with no pressure or obligation. To find out more, visit www.somertonlodge.co.uk and make contact if you or a loved one may benefit from the support on offer.

Much needed, so many alcoholics on the island.
£6,480??? How on earth do these ‘charitable’ organisations come up with these figures? Nice work if you can get it.
Government grants anyone?
