UPDATED: Emergency services are attending a serious road traffic collision on Smallbrook Lane in Ryde this lunchtime (Tuesday).
Firefighters from Ryde and Newport are in attendance at the scene near the humpback bridge, where two vehicles have sustained heavy damage.
Two people are thought to be trapped inside a white Renault Megane, which has collided head on with a black car. The crash occurred at just before 11:55.
Two ambulances and an ambulance officer are working alongside fire crews to assess the injuries sustained and extricate those trapped.
The occupants of the second car involved – a Vauxhall Zafira – are receiving medical attention from paramedics.
The road has been closed in both directions and is likely to remain closed for some time.
UPDATE @ 12:45 – The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance has landed in a field adjacent to the road, with a HEMS doctor and paramedic now working alongside the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service.
The incident is being described as ‘serious’.
UPDATE @ 13:10 – One male, thought to be the driver of the white Renault, is being airlifted to Southampton General Hospital after being extricated from his vehicle.
A female casualty in the same vehicle is being extricated and is expected to be conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital shortly. Both have sustained serious injuries.
Two adults and two children in the black Vauxhall have been conveyed to St Mary’s by land ambulance, however they have escaped any serious injury.
UPDATE @ 13:35 – More than 90 minutes since the collision occurred, all casualties have been freed and conveyed to hospital.
Paramedics and firefighters have now stood down as Police launch an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision.
The Collision Investigation Unit (CIU) from the mainland has been requested to attend the scene to conduct a thorough forensic investigation.
UPDATE @ 14:30 – CIU investigators have arrived at Smallbrook Lane to examine the scene, which is one of devastation.
The extent of the injuries sustained by those involved in the crash is currently unknown.
The road remains closed and is likely to remain closed for the remainder of the afternoon.
UPDATE @ 17:15 – Investigations continue this afternoon with the assistance of Stag Lane Motors, who are positioning the vehicles to recreate the moment of impact before they are recovered from the scene.
The road is anticipated to reopen shortly once debris has been cleared from the carriageway by Island Roads.
UPDATE @ 18:10 – Smallbrook Lane has now reopened in both directions.
The vehicles have been recovered by Stag Lane Motors and the carriageway swept clear by Island Roads.
The casualties are thought to be doing well in hospital.
