A scientific analysis of a fungus which is said to be killing the Umbrella Tree in East Cowes is to be carried out to determine once and for all if the tree could pose a risk to members of the public and passing motorists.
There are now 2 conflicting opinions as to the identification of the fungus on the Weeping Ash tree on the corner of York Avenue and Clarence Road. On 30th January an independent, qualified tree surgeon said that the tree is ‘solid and sound’ and does not appear to pose any immediate danger to the public.
However, the Isle of Wight Council says the tree is infected with the fugal body ‘Inonotus hispidus’. This fungus undermines the strength of the tree and often indicates that breakage of the affected branch or trunk could be imminent.
Last week the Council confirmed that it holds no objection to Island Roads’ application to have the tree removed, but has called for options to be considered and investigated further that may prevent the immediate removal of the tree.
The Forge at Whippingham have offered to build a steel framework to support the tree, free of charge, which local residents say should eliminate the fears of branches falling to the ground and the tree posing any threat.
Councillor Karl Love has said:
“I am totally supportive of the keeping of our town tree, whatever it takes to achieve this, and I know our Town Council also support the people in this matter.
“The decorating of the tree with ribbons has shown the love of our townspeople and together will will find a solutions to saving it.
“I also ask that Island Roads make every effort and listen to the people of our town. We don’t need to take this tree down even if it is dying. We can look at a modern preservation solution such as I have seen in other countries and create modern art from it.
“Recent events of the Floating Bridge and now this are too much for local residents to bare and we must do everything in our power to save and preserve this historic tree.
“I will do everything I can to ensure our town receives the accolade it deserves for its wold heritage, historical and scientific achievements. Our town will simply not role over and give in to other people’s aspirations and their impose wills and ideas for our town. This tree represents much of the past and our hopes for the future”.
