The Isle of Wight’s Sandown Airport has ranked as number one in a list of the most popular airfields in the United Kingdom.
According to figured released by the flight planning app SkyDemon, the airfield has received the most unique visitors of all the airfields in the country.
Speaking to Flyer magazine, Tim Dawson of SkyDemon explained how the figures are calculated:
“Anybody who has taken off or landed at the airfield counts for one point, whether they’ve used it 100 times or just once.”
“Therefore this isn’t an indication of the amount of traffic at the airfield, just how many unique visitors they’ve had which we think is synonymous with popularity and the amount of things to see/do there.”
Other airfields making the top 10 are nearby Lee-on-Solent which has reached number 7 on the list, and the closer to home Bembridge Airport, which gained 10th place.
Owner of Sandown Airport, Dan, said:
“The Island should be proud that its airport has beaten every other airfield in the country and is ranked as number 1.
“This is big news as it seriously puts the Isle of Wight on the map – especially as we’ve ranked above some of the largest in the country!”

Well done Dan .Well deserved.
A well deserved result in my opinion. I get untold joy watching the planes, Helicopters and Microlights flying about. It’s a shame we don’t get the Spitfire landing here, but just seeing and hearing that plane is the cherry on top for me.
They do sometimes .the flying instructors there are top class too
A huge well done to all the staff at Sandown Airport; I hope you are really proud of this fantastic achievement.
I have no objection to people having fun but when it comes at the expense of those that live on the flight path then we must ask ourselves whether both parties can coexist peacefully..
If all aircraft flew into and out of the airport over the Apse Heath solar farm I am fairly confident that the long suffering residents of Apse Heath would be happier.
Yes indeed. The airport has clearly done something right, so well done to them, but it has unfortunately come with quite a lot of extra noise for us who live nearby. We regularly now get very noisy ones coming over us in Newchurch, often the same one multiple times. Stops your conversation in the pub garden! Could they perhaps finish flying a bit earlier to give us some quieter, aircraft-free evenings now that we finally have a summer?
