Alamo Bar and Grill in Ryde has been handed a shock 1-star food hygiene rating by the Isle of Wight Council’s Environmental Health team.
Inspections paid a visit to the Esplanade establishment in mid-November and found that major improvement is necessary.
A full report issued to the popular grill house has said that generally, throughout the kitchen, hand contact points were unclean, the handles to fridge and freezers were sticky and there was a buildup of dirt in the area where hands would open them.
The inside and outside of the microwaves within the dessert area required cleaning, food was adhered to the internal walls [of the microwave] and also on the dials and hand contact points on the outside.
The inside lid of freezer 5 was cracked, with food such as baguettes being stored uncovered directly underneath. Furthermore, the upright freezer in the storage area, which had frozen steaks in, had a significant build-up of dirt around the bottom seal of the freezer and on the bottom shelf where frozen food was stored.
Inspectors also found that the probe wipes container was sticky and had a buildup of dirt on the outside, and the blade to the static can opener had a build-up of dirt and food debris too.
Some of the chopping boards, specifically the white and yellow, were heavily scored and discoloured, and the plastic measuring jugs were heavily stained and the plastic impacted from hot food and microwaving.
The ventilation canopy within the main kitchen area was very discoloured with signs of carbonisation and a door inside the kitchen, which was labelled as ‘staff only’, was very dirty.
The risk of contamination was highlighted as being a key issue by inspectors who found the toastie machine was placed directly underneath exposed ducting and an unfinished, very dirty wall. A container of cut tomatoes was placed on the red chopping board in the raw area for ease.
The electric fly killer was positioned directly over the sink which is used for washing food.
It was also found during November’s inspection that a wash hand basin was not readily accessible in the kitchen. Instead, staff were found to be using the food sink to wash their hands (including after handling raw meat) – the same sink used to wash salad and cool both rice and pasta for freezing. Alamo has been told to install additional basins.
Minor issues with allergens were also highlighted by inspectors. A small breakfast did not state that the sausages contain sodium metabisulphite and coleslaw was not listed as containing mustard.
Environmental Health inspectors are due to re-visit Alamo by the end of January.
Alamo has been contacted for a statement
Food Hygiene Rating – Scores on the Doors
Compliance with food hygiene and safety procedures – 10
Compliance with structural requirements – 20
Confidence in management/control procedures – 10
It doesn’t surprise me, whenever walking past, workers
outside smoking and vaping, they hardly look like the
cleanest bunch.
Went past today and quite few people were inside.
I blame IW Councils Environmental Health Team,
they should make all eateries display their
Hygiene Ratings on the door, or be closed down
and fined heavily.
Customers are still visiting such establishments
not knowing they are visiting FILTH HOLES.
Too be honest if this establishment had 5 stars
I wouldn’t eat in there.
I preferred Dinelli’s when it was in Ryde.
Well, all I can say is that for the last couple of months, a friend and I have visited fairly regularly, and have had something to eat each time. We were so impressed with the food, service and friendly atmosphere that I left a review on their Facebook page.
Neither of us came down with food poisoning as a result of eating there, and I’m sure that many establishments have far worse problems where hygiene and cleanliness are concerned.
Same with Busy Bee, they scored a poor score
I have not stopped eating in Busy Bee.
In my opinion Busy Bee is one of the best food
places on the island.
Great breakfasts etc
I ate in The Alamo just yesterday and was unwell immediately after. It always seems like an extension of the owners living room, with family hanging out, kids, not entirely sure who the staff are and who the customers are etc – running a professional establishment seems like it’s been the least of priorities across the board. After yesterday and now reading this, I won’t go back to this cesspool.
You only have to see them smoking and vaping
outside, hardly a good piece of advertising.
Premier Inn at Sandown are the same, hence
never going there.
There are too many filth holes.
IW Council should force all businesses to display
their hygiene ratings.
All places that deal with food for the public, should have a five star rating as soon as they open to the public. The Alamo should have been closed immediately and NOT allowed to reopen until the five star rating has been achieved. All staff that work in a kitchen should have a certificate to show their understanding of Health and Safety. If this is broken, the person that is holding the certificate, as well as the owners should be fined.
100% correct, to my knowledge they are not
displaying an hygiene rating xo many people
enter not knowing it is a filth hole.
