Ryde Saints Football Club has given £500 to a humanitarian appeal by the Red Cross for Ukraine.
Ryde Saints donated 50% of youth players weekly fees and all starting 11 subscriptions for both 1st team and reserves from last week. The club also raised an additional £250 through a collection tin at youth training, youth games, and the Reserves game on Saturday.
This means the total amount that Ryde Saints will be donating to the Red Cross DEC Humanitarian Appeal stands at £500.
The British Red Cross DEC Ukraine Appeal helps Ukrainians and those caught up in war by providing food, first aid, clean water, shelter, support, warm clothing, hygiene parcels and medicines. It also helps support hospitals and healthcare facilities, fire fighters, and civil protection units
Ryde Saints club secretary Jayden Frankling has said:
“All at Ryde Saints are saddened by the current events ongoing in Ukraine.
“It would be easy to sit back and just give our thoughts and prayers to the people of Ukraine. However, we cannot stand idly by on a Saturday or Sunday, having fun playing football, whilst those less fortunate – some of which the same age as our young players – are literally fleeing warzones and defending their country.
“They are fighting for the exact thing we will have this weekend: freedom. Freedom to have fun, freedom to spend time with family and friends, freedom to do the things they love.
“On behalf of the whole Ryde Saints Committee, we’d like to thank all those who put a donation into our collection tin. We believe it is so important for us to help in any way we can.
“We also encourage everyone else to help in any way they can, by donating to this appeal or to any other charities that are doing all they can to support.
“Alternatively, anyone able to assist by donating old clothes, necessary hygiene products, and food parcels can do so at one of the many drop points on the Island (Ryde Academy for example).”
