The Isle of Wight’s only Army Reserve unit is inviting prospective recruits to a special open evening in Newport next month.
The Isle of Wight Troop, part of 165 Port and Maritime Regiment, Royal Logistic Corps, will host the event at the Newport Army Reserve Centre on Drill Hall Road at 19:30 on Wednesday 5th August.
The evening will give prospective recruits the chance to meet serving reservists, learn about the different roles available and find out what life in the Army Reserve is like. Food and refreshments will also be provided.
The Island’s military links stretch back more than 160 years through the historic Isle of Wight Rifles, whose members served in conflicts ranging from the Boer War and Gallipoli to the Second World War and more recent operations in Iraq.
Today, the Island unit forms part of the Royal Logistic Corps, specialising in moving people, vehicles, equipment and ammunition from ship to shore in support of military operations around the world.
A variety of roles are available, including Port Operator, Marine Engineer, Mariner, HR Specialist and Chef, with training designed to provide skills that can also benefit members in their civilian careers.
Lieutenant Symmans, Isle of Wight Troop Commander, said:
“I’ve had the privilege of serving with the Island’s only Army Reserve unit for 24 years. I’ve met some amazing people and been on many adventures.”

“I’d recommend joining the Army Reserve to anyone who wishes to contribute to the Armed Forces whilst still being able to live on the Island.”
The Army Reserve enables people to serve alongside their civilian careers, with members receiving training, pay and opportunities to deploy on operations when required.
