Wessex Cancer Support is calling for more teams to sign up for its 2026 Dragon Boat Race, which will return to Island Harbour on 26th September following the success of last year’s fundraising event.
The annual event will see teams compete in a series of heats, with the fastest crews progressing to the grand final.
Last year’s race raised £20,000 for Wessex Cancer Support, despite challenging weather conditions. The charity says the funds helped support its Isle of Wight centre, which provided free cancer support services to more than 470 people during the year.
Hannah Dunford, Isle of Wight Fundraising Manager at Wessex Cancer Support, has said:
“We’re really excited to bring this back. Last year, despite the relentless rain, the event was a huge success, raising £20,000 for local people affected by Cancer.
“Last year, the IOW Centre provided free Cancer services to over 470 people, all thanks to our incredible supporters. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a complete beginner, this high-energy challenge is perfect for everyone.
“It’s an ideal event for corporates or groups of friends and family, so get your team together and bring on the fun. This year, come rain or shine, there will be an after-party!”
Each boat requires a team of 11 people – 10 rowers and 1 drummer. Entry costs £360 per team, equivalent to around £33 per crew member, with participants encouraged to raise as much sponsorship as possible.
Ten teams took part in the 2025 event, with WH Brading crowned champions. Solent Cruises, which competed last year, said:
“We had the best time despite the weather.”
A spectator added:
“Well done, really well organised.”
WH Brading, Datum Electronics and Snap Fitness have already signed up to compete in 2026.
A spokesperson for the returning teams said:
“What a great experience, teamwork, electric vibes … We’re coming back stronger and ready to go.”
Teams wishing to enter the Dragon Boat Race 2026 can register via the Wessex Cancer Support website. Those interested in sponsoring the event can contact Hannah Dunford by email at [email protected].
