More than 85% of Islanders who responded to a localised Green Party survey say they were affected by June’s heatwave, with difficulty sleeping, dehydration and financial pressures among the biggest impacts reported.
The Isle of Wight Green Party surveyed throughout July, gathering responses from 273 residents on the Isle of Wight about how periods of extreme heat affect everyday life.
The results have been released as the UK enters what the party says is its fourth heatwave of the year, with temperatures forecast to reach as high as 35c this week.
According to the survey, more than 85% of respondents said they had been impacted by the June heatwave.
The most common issue was difficulty sleeping, affecting 72.2% of respondents, while 38.8% reported becoming dehydrated or feeling unwell. More than 1 in 5 said social events had been cancelled because of the heat, while 15% reported school closures affecting their household.
The survey also highlighted the financial impact of prolonged hot weather, with more than 62% of respondents saying the heatwave had cost them money.
Those responding cited increased water and electricity use, the purchase of fans and cooling equipment, and lost income due to work being cancelled. One café owner reported taking just £8 during a day of extreme temperatures because customers stayed away.
Pet owners also described significant challenges, with 118 respondents saying their animals had struggled during the heatwave. Comments included concerns about overheating and reduced appetite, while one respondent reported that their cat had died during the hot weather.
The survey also collected personal accounts from healthcare workers, people with disabilities, pregnant women and others who said the high temperatures had affected both their physical and mental wellbeing.
Vix Lowthion, Green Party Isle of Wight Councillor for Carisbrooke and Gunville, has said:
“The results of our Green Party Heatwave survey make sobering reading. Here we can listen and hear the desperate and anxious voices of ordinary islanders, who need greater support to cope with these alarming heatwave conditions.
“Whilst on the television news we see clips which associate the warm weather with happy children, beaches and ice creams, in reality many families clearly were forced to stay at home in order to keep cool and look after pets.
“We must take action to tackle the climate crisis now. The consequences are not hypothetical, they are very real – for our health, our animals and our local economy.”
The survey also invited residents to share advice for coping with future periods of extreme heat, with more than 150 respondents offering practical suggestions including keeping homes shaded during the day, opening windows overnight, checking on vulnerable neighbours and ensuring pets have access to cool spaces and plenty of water.
The Green Party says the survey was launched before the recent Isle of Wight wildfires and therefore did not examine the wider impact of prolonged hot weather on the Island’s countryside and wildlife, including the risks posed by BBQs, fireworks and sky lanterns.

Maybe the Greens would like to comment on the other heat issue, ie the one that ordinary folk who freeze during the winter as they can’t afford to put the heating on, mainly owing to the inflated prices of “renewables” that do not work cost effectively.

The headline is totally misleading as one might expect for anything to do with the Green Party.
First of all, it just reveals the outcome of an alleged “survey”, no doubt carried out amongst the fruit cakes who actually vote for the cult followers of Dave Paulden.
From a baseline of 145,000 (plus) people, 273 responded as one would expect – moaning about “climate change”, as does Loathsome, with her “We must take action to tackle the climate crisis now.”
To keep harping on about it is not acceptable.
If Polanski is able to enlarge women’s breasts, then changing the UK weather patterns should be a doddle.
We have 4 seasons and it is about time that “summer” should be summer, which means – guess what – higher temperatures.
Get used to it and adapt accordingly.

Another impact yet to filter through…just for the flat-earthers and climate deniers.
Agriculture.
Stunted field crops will mean higher prices come winter. Smaller produce size will double that impact.
Animal feed (grass and grain) will make farmers have to buy in…at a premium…so higher prices come winter.
Cows under heat stress produce less milk. Higher prices.
But the impact you’re likely to see most is yet more coastal erosion. For the very very stupid I’ll explain. Parched earth cracks and loses its ability to retain moisture. When it does rail the water permeates (that means runs through) the cracks and any soil/sand clinging to the other soil and sand gets gently washed out and the cracks get bigger. And bigger. After a few months of normal rain great big chunks of earth, weighed down by the water on the top layer (as well as rock) make the edges of land all fall down. This too causes prices to rise because the council are obliged to spend money shoring up paths, walkways, roads for public safety, and that money eventually comes from you.. It also costs money for those who live in the areas impacted. Some people lose their entire houses, and those who don’t can’t sell theirs and lose value. Whole postcodes find their house insurance premiums dramatically increase.
So I guess then as well as the Green Party, Greta Thunburg, the Government, every other world government, the eco-warriors, the woke, the renewables industry, 99.9% of scientists we can also add farmers and geologists and the Insurance Industry (not to mention the stock market who bet on disasters in order to drive prices up to create profit….sorry, too much information for you to absorb) to the list of those in on the ‘scam’, ‘conspiracy’ and ‘liars’ who DON’T still believe the earth is flat.
What the greens do not tell you and totally negates their arguement is the UK is responsible for less than 0.1 of all emissions and we are the least polluting country out fo the G7, when 2 countries are responsible for over 60 per cent of all pollution they do not seem to aim their arrows at those countries and I bet they all buy articles on line form india and china that only fuel such pollution.
The gist of what you say is exactly right, except that I believe the figure for which the UK is responsible is actually 0.9%.

Pollution is generally per capita, therefore the higher the population, the higher the output. China and India as well as being heavily populated are also two of the biggest manufacturers pumping out pollution from fossil fuel. To feed their people. And it is up to countries like ours to keep on beating the gong IN ORDER to get the rest of the world onboard. We won’t bankrupt ourselves….that’s also ridiculous. But we could get very rich doing nothing…trouble is, you can’t eat money. Or worse…drink it. If this continues heat won’t be the problem in a few decades, war will be over water resources.
Or…we could lead the world in renewable energy and put the pollution industry countries out of business, which would in turn leave other markets open to recreate their production industries…like cotton mills, shipbuilding, steel…things we used to have.
Trouble is there are a few very wealthy nations whose ONLY production is oil….and they lobby our governments to make sure we keep buying. So who is it do you think that has most to gain from nudging people into thinking climate change is rubbish?

Norway, Canada and Iceland are all majority renewables for manufacturing…they’re not bankrupt. 12 countries above us (we’re 13th) charge their energy grids using wind and solar. None of them are bankrupt either. Djibouti is 2nd, having gone from 0-67% renewable in just 5 years, aiming for 100% in the next 5-10. It’s created jobs, wealth and is attracting investments.
The geopolitical climate dictates that reliance on fossil fuels can also attract whatever price they want to dictate.
Yes, we have North Sea Oil…but we’ve already extracted 93%. The other 7% will last another 25 years. Think back to how much geopolitics has changed the world since 2001. If we invest billions in drilling more oilfields in the vain hope of finding more…and don’t… how do you think the current holders to ransom might react? And we’ll have spent the money we might have used to be on energy independence.
If what’s worrying you is bankruptcy, try imagining a scenario whereby energy is necessary for say, desalination, and the cost of bought-in fossil fuel is prohibitive.
As for rose tints, don’t resort to cliches, it’s people like Miliband who have been paying attention and doing some evidence-based research…viewing the world as it is smacks of fatalism which you do seem to have whilst simultaneously ignoring the existence of the future. Or the future we’d all like our kids and grandchildren to have.

We have not extracted 93% of north sea oil. Current estimates suggest that a further 10 billion barrels remain which will last for many decades to come.
Buyers of products from polluting countries will always be governed by price. That is just the way the world is – always has been and always will be. Altruism doesn’t get a look in.
Mad Miliband would gain a lot more credibility if he hadn’t saddled us with the highest electricity costs in the developed world. Yes, total bankruptcy will not occur – the voices of reason and common sense will prevent it, as is beginning to happen, thankfully. It doesn’t alter the fact that his policies are making us all poorer for no tangible benefit.
