A campfire, believed to have been left smouldering unattended, is thought to have sparked the massive wildfire that devastated Headon Warren, destroying important flora, fauna and habitat.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has confirmed that, while the cause of the fire at Headon Warren has not been fully established, the remains of a campfire were found in the area during the incident – which has now prompted renewed warnings about the dangers of lighting fires in the countryside during hot, dry weather.
The major fire broke out at Headon Warren, near the world-famous The Needles, at just gone 09:00 on Thursday morning (23rd July), with flames rapidly spreading across the dry heathland.
More than 80 firefighters were deployed at the height of the incident, supported by crews from 4 neighbouring fire and rescue services, specialist High Volume Pumps drawing water from the sea, off-road firefighting vehicles and a helicopter, which carried out repeated water drops on inaccessible hotspots.
After burning for 5 days, the wildfire was finally extinguished earlier today, having devastated the protected heathland.
The fire service is now urging anyone visiting the countryside to avoid lighting campfires or using disposable barbecues, warning that they can quickly spread during periods of hot, dry weather and put people, wildlife and the countryside at risk.
A spokesperson for Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has said:
“During periods of hot, dry weather, campfires and barbecues can quickly spread, causing fires that put people, wildlife, and the countryside at risk.
“Incidents like this also require a significant emergency response, which can take firefighters away from other incidents where they may be needed.
“We are urging anyone visiting the countryside to take extra care and avoid lighting campfires or using barbecues, as they can easily start fires. Please also dispose of cigarettes, litter, and other waste responsibly.
“Wildfires can start easily and spread quickly in warm, dry conditions. By taking simple precautions, everyone can help protect our countryside and reduce the risk of fires.”
The National Trust has described the impact as significant, warning that the internationally important landscape will take time to recover.
Just 1 appliance and a water carrier remain in attendance at Headon Warren, as firefighters keep a sharp eye out for any flare-ups in the coming hours. The operation is expected to be fully stood down tomorrow (Tuesday).

I just hope that no wildlife were hurt or killed by this terrible event. Also many thanks to the fire fighters and volunteers that helped in this incident.
