A male cyclist is receiving medical care after being knocked off his bike on the High Street in Ryde this evening (Tuesday).
It was just before 18:15 that emergency services were alerted to the incident, which has taken place at the junction of High Street and St John’s Road.
The collision, which involves a cyclist and a white Volkswagen Transporter van, has blocked the upper half of High Street, forcing its closure.
The impact has caused a bullseye on the vehicle’s windscreen, leaving glass debris spread across the busy road. The vehicle’s bonnet is also dented.
The cyclist is being tended to by paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service.
His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.
UPDATE – Ryde High Street has now reopened to all traffic.
The cyclist has sustained a serious, but not life-threatening, injury. He has been taken to St Mary’s Hospital for treatment.
Hope the cyclist is ok.
Island Roads are not safe for cyclists, there are hardly any
cycle lanes and the High Street is very narrow for large vans.
The island needs more cycle lanes.
I gave up cycling on the island 20 years ago, too dangerous.
I thought the Island spent millions on cycle paths all over the place? I find it strange that there seem to be more cyclists on the roads whilst these paths seem almost empty. Perhaps I am wrong, but perhaps if more cyclists actually used these VERY expensive pathways, there may be a tad less congestion and less accidents.

Err not a clue mate. I simply point out that a great fuss was made of the millions(?) Spent from grants and tax to make the Island a cycle path nirvana, I also remember a cycle magazine making a huge push for cyclists to visit and ‘ride the Wight’. What went where holds no interest for me as a non cyclist so perhaps you should direct your enquiry to the relevant department.
The real truth is that the “SO” called authorities encourage cyclists to come to the island with hardly any cycle
lanes putting their lives in danger because being there are
no speed cameras to STOP motorists speeding.
The Military Road is a DEATH TRAP, look how many accidents
have taken place along this Lawless Rosd over the years.
Davimel, the bike lane along Ryde Esplanade was designed by a cretin and a councillor, it starts inside the bus station and ends at Eastern Gardens, it goes from nowhere to nowhere and all the lycra clad road lice ignore it.
There is a bike lane from the bottom of Lushington hill alongside the racecourse with shared pavement as far as Fairlea but the cyclist prefer to ride in the main road blocking traffic, if we nasty motorists have to “think bike” and give them loads of room how is it right that in slow traffic they whip past within millimetres of our vehicles, my wing mirror has been hit twice by cyclists.
Yet another vanity project from a councillor no doubt? I admit that those in paved areas do rely upon the care and attention of users, which vary according to the days tribulations. A badly designed cycle path must be a genuine pain for all concerned, perhaps cycle groups should challenge the council on the stupid design and try to get it untangled.
I was pleased to see a cyclist fined over £1000 for overtaking a parked car and reporting an oncoming car for not leaving the obligatory 20 foot gap. The video evidence from the cyclist caused the prosecution so khama is a bugger.

If a cyclist refuses to use a cycle lane they should be

The photograph of the VW shows a couple of dents on the bonnet, but the windscreen is intact and there doesn’t appear to be any glass on the road.

looks to me like the cyclist may have been coming down the one way street the wrong way and hit the front of the van to make damage to the bonnet and window as if he was going with the traffic he would have gone under the van or just been knocked of his bike
To me it look as if he might have been coming down Green Street and was crossing High Street.

I see so many cyclists ignoring the red lights at that junction and all around the island. It seems traffic lights dont apply to cyclists. I wonder if this was the case here.
Then you see cyclists shouting at other drivers about road safety in the next breath.

Time to make cyclists display a number plate like motorbikes
pay a road fund fee and they MUST have insurance.

If you actually kept up with the Highway code then you would find out that it is advised that cyclists should ride two-abreast and ride away from the kerb for safety reasons, to prevent motorists from passing too close for safety.
Where does it state in the Highway code they cycle

And how much should cyclists pay for road fund charges? If we say that the average bike weighs 15kg then this would work out approximately 1/100 of the price of road fund, or £2 per year, how much would it cost to actually collect this, and also the insurance, and ANPR for push bikes, and also would you put a number plate on the front of a bike, bearing in mind that number plates were removed from motorcycle mudguards decades ago for safety reasons?

If they ride against traffic the it is not the motorists fault.
