A 63-year-old East Cowes man has pleaded guilty to drink driving, which resulted in a 2-vehicle crash, telling the court: “I’m an adult, I knew what I was doing”.
Stephen Miller, of York Avenue, appeared before the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court earlier this week (Tuesday), where he made a full admission regarding the offences that occurred on the night of 14th March this year.
Liz Miller, for the Crown Prosecution Service, told the court that police received reports at around 21:00 of a 2-vehicle collision on Whippingham Road. Officers attended and found Miller to be driving when the level of alcohol in his breath was over the legal limit.
Due to the collision, Miller sustained bruising and swelling to his face, for which he was taken by ambulance to St Mary’s Hospital. It was here that a blood alcohol test was carried out and produced a reading of172 milligrammes, the legal limit being just 80.
Defending himself, Stephen Miller addressed the magistrates, saying:
“There is no excuse, I’m an adult. I knew what I was doing, so I’ll take it on the chin.
“There is no excuse for what I have done; it is despicable. The only defence I have is that I have not touched a drop of alcohol since – it’s my downfall.”
The defendant continued, speaking openly about the offence and showing full acceptance in the justice system.
He said:
” I didn’t intend t to drive a car that night, but it happened, and I’m an adult; I knew what I was doing.”
The case was adjourned for sentencing on 6th October.
although he, obviously, shouldn’t have done it,
it makes a refreshing change for someone to actually admit full responsibility and not try to make excuses….

Honesty is the best policy but drink driving is so wrong.
Everyday numpties all around the world are committing such crimes
more needs to be done to educate motorists.

At present majority of vehicles display Hello etc
Maybe it’s time for vehicle manufacturers to do their bit.
More signs should be displayed and more TV commercials need
showing.
