A Ryde man who refused to provide a specimen for analysis after testing positive for cannabis has appeared before magistrates.
Lee Hayward, 48, of High Street in Ryde, admitted failing to provide a specimen for analysis, driving without a licence and driving without insurance when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court earlier this week (Tuesday).
Prosecuting, Giles Fletcher, told the court that on the 7th March, Police stopped a Ford Transit on Medina Road in Cowes after it had got off the Cowes Floating Bridge.
Initially, Hayward identified himself as his brother in a bid to avoid detection, but quickly came clean about who he was. Officers, having noticed a smell of cannabis coming from Hayward, conducted a roadside drugs wipe which returned a positive reading for cannabis.
Having been arrested and taken to Newport Police Station, Hayward refused to complete a further evidential reading.
Checks on the vehicle found that Hayward was driving without insurance and a valid licence.
The court heard how Hayward has been banned from the road on 2 separate occasions within the last 10-years, in 2016 and 2022.
Defending, Jim Osborne, told the court the case would benefit from the creation of a pre-sentence report.
Magistrates adjourned the case until the 28th June.

So many numpties on the Island think it’s ok to
drive without a licence and insurance.
Throw the book at such persons, strong deterrents
are required.
Talking of strong deterrents, how about making them spend time with you, forever moaning?
Unless guilty why not provide!, obviously something to
hide.
NO EXCUSES!
