A superb team performance saw Brading come from behind to beat high flying Hants Premier League opponents Stockbridge in the 2nd round of the Hampshire Trophy on Saturday.
On a superb pitch, the opening 10 minutes saw a glut of chances with Stockbridge missing 2 good chances before Jacob Treagus received a shot corner and his mazy run ended with a superb finish (0-1).
Moments later, the home side levelled with a shot from distance (1-1). Brading then found themselves behind when the skilful Stockbridge centre forward put them ahead (2-1).
The crazy opening period didn’t end there, and Dan Vale finished superbly to put the Island side level (2-2). Chances came and went at both ends, and the Romans were indebted to goalkeeper Andy Morey, who 1st pulled off a stunning double save and then beat away a fierce drive to go into the half time break on level terms.
Half time: Stockbridge 2-2 Brading Town
The 2nd half saw the Romans start under pressure, but their work rate was magnificent as the Islanders harried, chased, blocked, pressed, and pressurised the home side. Brading then got ahead when Jacob Treagus grabbed his 2nd (2-3).
Jack Youngson replaced the injured Tim Shaw in the middle, and he helped provide a solid foundation for Brading to press forward. Aaron Bennett scored a superb goal from distance to increase the Roman’s lead (2-4).
Stockbridge then scored a very scrappy 3rd (3-4)to make the last few minutes nervy, but Brading held out for the win.

After the game, manager Steve Lawton said:
“So proud of the squad today – the lads were brilliant and the support from those that came away much appreciated.
“Football is a team game, and the team were outstanding today. Aaron Youngson’s work rate was phenomenal and set the tone. Scott Lawson was a constant threat and caused them no end of problems. The back 4 were superb, and Andy made some big saves at big times.
“The man-of-the-match today was a tough choice in some respects as the team were superb, but Sam Knowles turned in a magnificent display. He was up against a very good centre forward, but he showed today what I’ve felt ever since he’s played for me: 1 of the best defenders on the island. His reading of the game, calmness under pressure and organisation – first class.”
