Following the reports of a small number of councils who have had repeated disruptive public meetings, the Isle of Wight Association of Local Councils (IWALC) would like to assure residents that there is support and guidance for all town and parish councils on the Island.
The Isle of Wight Association of Local Councils has always been available to help members who have difficulty in resolving problems within their council. As a member of the Association there is access to the National Association of Local Councils (NALC), whose services include legal advice.
Peter Whiteman Chairman of IWALC said:
“I have been a member of various Town & Parish councils around our Island and am at present a member for Newport Parish Council.
“I can appreciate it is difficult at this time, as we have all been asked to take on more services from the Isle of Wight Council. It is hard sometimes to take on services that some members have little or no understanding how to provide, however, training is the key and IWALC is willing and able to supply the tools to assist with these on-going changes.
“All Town & Parish Councils and IW Council need to work together for the benefit of our Island. Currently 24 of the 33 town and parish councils on the Island are members of IWALC and I would say to the others the door is always open’’.
