An Isle of Wight Councillor has warned that spreading 34 tonnes of sand on a muddy, temporary school car park, as advised by Isle of Wight Council officers, has simply made matters worse.
The surface of the temporary car park at Vectis Field off Wellington Road, Newport was originally covered with plastic mesh which, says Councillor Whitehouse (Conservative, Newport West Ward), has sunk beneath the mud, affording no protection to the ground and giving no traction to the wheels of the cars using the facility.
Cllr Whitehouse has said:
“The quagmire has simply got deeper, posing a real threat to the safety of users and causing frustration to my local residents as drivers park their vehicles in crowded local roads instead.”
Christ the King College, for whom the temporary car park was put in place with the support of the Council to assist during the current rebuilding works, has consistently argued for the surface to be covered in limestone, or some similar surface, instead; and has contacted the Council once again to ask for such a proposal to be considered before more sand and money is wasted on the current, ineffective solution.
Cllr Whitehouse adds:
“It’s great that the Council were willing to assist the College and my local residents but ever more sand is just creating ever more mud. We need a different approach.”
