‘Stay away from cracks and cliff egdes’ – those are the words of the Isle of Wight Council following a landslip at Atherfield Point earlier this weekend.
Cracks in the coastal path at Atherfield Point first appeared earlier this week, with Islander Glenn Martin documenting the developments on Facebook.
Heavy rain between Friday evening and Saturday morning has encouraged a large mass of land to slip away onto the beach below.
Several parts of the coastal path between Whale Chine and Grange Chine already sit precariously close to the edge.
An Isle of Wight Council spokesperson has said:
“The Isle of Wight Council’s Rights of Way team are currently assessing the coastal path and officers are currently assessing for further movements.“When enjoying coastal walks please stay away from cracks and cliff edges. When enjoying the beaches, do not walk directly under cliffs, nor climb or allow children to climb the cliffs and loose material.”
The island is falling apart, such a shame.
Until the council undertakes some coastal protection work by putting large rocks on the beach below to replace those worn away by sea action, we shall continue to lose this spectacular coastline.
Rocks worn away by the sea? what rocks? Thats been a shingle beach from Rocken End to Compton for as long as anyone can remember
They are forever pleading poverty it will
never happen.
Look at the poor Undercliff Road to Niton
that never re-opened.
Won’t work its from the top falling away, you cant stop it milly only has 5 years before it’s closed as they haven’t and wont look to move certain parts of the road inland..and will be gone for ever..
They should only run light vehicles along
the Military Road to help matters.
The island is so clueless when it comes
to road safety
This latest slip is a long way from the Military Road and is sandstone. Once again, you’re talking out of your a*se
There are some parts that are getting closer to
the edge though.
Nothing wrong talking out of one’s a^se
many politicians do it on a regular basis
it doesn’t do them any harm.
