Subsidence issues could force a popular Island pub to close for up to a month whilst repairs are undertaken – but it remains open for now.
The Woodmans Arms, located on Station Road in the village, has had to call in the experts to fix what it describes as subsidence.
The owners have been waiting some 3 years to find out exactly what is going on and the problem has even stopped them from signing a new, 20-year free-of-tie lease.
It is hoped that on Monday (23rd January) a temporary wall can be installed to allow time for an investigation into how best to fix the problem to take place.
In an announcement posted on their Facebook page, they said:
“One scenario is next Wednesday, they could give the ok to close the pub the following week for a month. Another is to find out what’s wrong on Wednesday, take the wall down and book in works to be done when it fewer affects trade.”
“However we are in the dark and are at the mercy of the Insurance. This does mean some of you who have booked tables in the next coming weeks may have to have them cancelled or rearranged, we will be in contact directly if we feel this may effect you.”

It may be stating the obvious, but the amount of water that collects on the corner with the Briddlesford Road also floods the caravan area next to the pub.
With that amount of water in the ground on a regular basis, it has to be having an affect.
Also, don’t forget the general area is prone to ground movement? Well at least that was one of the reasons given for closing the railway to Newport?
I hope they get it sorted, modern methods can work wonders these days.
I hope all goes well.
It’s a nice place to have a meal, or just a drink.
I had a fabulous sunday lunch there when visiting the island. I hope this gets resolve quickly, best of luck.
