Councillors from Sandown Town Council litter picked and carried out maintenance work to ensure the Steven Jenkins Playground was open for families on Saturday (4th July).
The Town Council have installed up to the minute guidance on equipment usage, social distancing, hygiene advise and notices to help children and families safely enjoy the amenities.
The playground at Sandham Gardens has been closed since the lockdown was introduced back in March.
Mayor Gary Young said:
“Thanks to colleagues for helping litter pick, repair damaged fences and carry out other tasks, to make sure we can open the play area safely this weekend”.
Deputy Mayor Paul Brading added:
“We have worked with local stakeholders, who are also opening their facilities this weekend, to ensure we respond to local need and thanks to our groundsman, Steve, the grass in the playpark and by the cycle racks is looking in great condition”.
The Town Council has opened the town’s public toilets with additional cleaning, installed 22 rubbish points on the beach and are in the process of implementing new guidance allowing the opening of the Broadway Centre.
Ongoing repair work is taking place at the skate park, which should be re-opened in the coming days.
Mayor Young concluded:
“It’s regrettable that the damage to the Skatepark has delayed the safe re-opening of the facility, especially given the efforts of Councillors to make it safe to open for local children and families”.
Locals have taken to social media to express their disappointment that the playground at Battery Gardens remains padlocked.

It’s a shame people including kids think it’s ok to drop rubbish. Well done for having a clear up, looks much better and tidier now. Keep the island litter free, that’s why rubbish bins were invented!
When will it be opening !!
