A popular business on the Island that rears Carp is looking to expand its premises as trade continues to flourish.
Based at Downend, Combley Farm already has a well-established carp breeding business but has sent an application the Isle of Wight Council as they look to grow the business.
In a major development, 4 new fish breeding ponds and a store building are proposed for the fish farm and lakes.
Planning documents – submitted by agent Norman White – said the work is planned to increase the supply of fish to angling businesses nationwide, as well as on the Island.
The store building will include holding tanks and filters to keep the carp in a healthy state, prior to their export, as well as fish food storage. The new lakes will have an average depth of 2.2m, encouraging the carp to grow rapidly, Mr White said, to a size acceptable to the fishing community.
The store building will be kept to the minimum size necessary to accommodate the commercial vehicles and machinery and coloured green to ensure it would not be intrusive to the locality, with the further development, Mr White said, would not cause any loss to the farm’s other activities.
You can view the plans, 22/01274/FUL and 22/01091/FUL, on the council’s planning register. Comments can be submitted until 12th September.
The Environment Agency has submitted no objection to the additional fish rearing ponds.

I hope this goes ahead, what an amazing enterprise. I guess few people knew it existed.
Great for the Island economy.
Hopefully they will be allowed to do it,I never knew it was there !!
Best wishes for this enterprising business. I’m more of a deep sea fisherman rather than a freshwater one. Wish it every success.
I doubt it’ll get the go ahead. Looks like a load of carp to me!
something fishy going on here!
