OVER 50 NEW PARKING RESTRICTIONS TO BE INTRODUCED IN AND AROUND NEWPORT

More than 50 new Isle of Wight parking restrictions are being introduced, but a few have hit the brakes, for now. Yellow lines for Alvington Manor View in Gunville and waiting restrictions on Wellington Road in Carisbrooke have been postponed. At a meeting on Thursday evening, Isle of Wight Council leader and cabinet member for transport and infrastructure, Councillor Phil Jordan announced those projects were on hold, for further consideration. Other restrictions for Newport, Carisbrooke and Gunville were approved by members of the Isle of Wight Council’s cabinet, to improve highway safety, following requests by residents and town, parish and community councils made over the last 10 years. ‘No waiting’ restrictions will be added to Carisbrooke Road, close to the mini roundabout at Wellington Road, to allow the free flow of traffic at peak times, with no parking on Monday and Friday, between 08:00 to 18:00. On Gunville Road, near the Forest Road junction, 2 sections of double yellow lines will be added. Other restrictions will be in place on Clatterford Road, St John’s Place, Staplers Road and Fairlee Road. Cllr Jordan described some of the changes as ‘quite minor’. Others are about ensuring existing restrictions can be enforced. Speaking at yesterday’s cabinet meeting, Councillor Andrew Garratt said parked cars tend to mean slower traffic and suggested yellow lines are not always the best option to protect pedestrians. He said physical structures were needed to help improve pedestrian safety and unless the restrictions were enforced, there was no point in putting the yellow lines down.
