Prices for using the Cliff Lift at Shanklin are to be reduced while Osborne Steps are closed to the public.
Ground stability issues affecting the retaining walls have forced the closure of the steps, which run from Eastcliff Promenade to the Esplanade.
The Isle of Wight Council has announced that the lift will begin 2023 operations on Saturday (1st April) and for the time being there will be a flat rate of £1 return (instead of £2 for adults/OAP and £1.50 junior).
The temporary measure will stay in place until the steps are reopened but no timeframe has been given.
A cliff lift has been in operation at Shanklin since the 1890s and the new lift was built and opened in 1958 following damage to its predecessor in World War II.

So basically because the IWC are too inept to reopen Osborne steps they are to lose 50% of revenue from the lift?
You really could not make it up could you???
Not really because they expect more people to take the lift and increase income. Just walk to the end of the Esplanade. The hill isn’t much trouble.
Unnecessary. People get used to steps and footpaths being closed off on this Island for considerable lengths of time.
