The number of Islanders who have died having tested positive for coronavirus has increased from 19 to 21, according to NHS England.
This afternoon’s (Saturday’s) data release shows that another 2 people have died at St Mary’s Hospital, with the latest deaths occurring just yesterday.
As of today, the total number of people who have tested positive for COVID-19 on the Island is 86. Thankfully, 21 people have recovered from coronavirus and have been discharged from hospital.
Alistair Flowerdew, Medical Director at Isle of Wight NHS Trust, said:
“Sadly, we can confirm that two people being cared for at St Mary’s Hospital who had tested positive for coronavirus have died.
“The men were in their 80s and had underlying health conditions.
“Their families have been informed and our thoughts and deepest condolences are with them all at this difficult and distressing time.”
In the national picture, a total of 148,377 people have tested positive for COVID-19 with a total of 20,319 deaths.

More sad news. I went out for my weekly shop on Thursday and there were cars and people everywhere. A steady stream of traffic going up the hill at East Cowes, obviously from off the ferry, some cars with dinghies and canoes on top of their roofs, presumably the people in the cars coming here for a holiday, other people around with backpacks on, hardly the sort of thing they would bother with if only going out for a spot of exercise near their home.
Also people are still coming into the country from aboard and not being checked on entry but just allowed to go forth into wherever they are going unchallenged. This I heard about last night from a woman talking on radio who had witnessed this yesterday afternoon after she had flown back here after trying to get back into the country for days. So even this far in, people are still coming in without being checked at arrival at the airports, no temperature checks, nothing.
Sorry for typo in above comment, it should have read “coming from *abroad*, not *aboard*, I allowed the site’s auto correct to apply what it thought and I should have checked it more carefully to see if it was right or not.
Shanklin and Ventnor are busy as ever. People everywhere.
I cannot explain how much I hate the general public who are soo sooo stupid and selfish!
Rip to all the people who have lost there lives deepest sympathy’s to all the families who have lost loved ones
Dave David……Hate is a very strong word, are you on (I hope) a watch list somewhere?
@Dave Sawyer david – from someone elses perspective – you are part of the general public as well.
People who feel vulnerable or at risk, should take responsibility for themselves and they can stay indoors, everyone else has the right to go out and do what they want.
The state does not have the right to prevent you from taking your own risks. If it did, then why aren’t they stopping people smoking, which kills 78,000 people a year in the uk or 1500 a week, every week and has been doing so for years and years.
You just don’t get it do you. These people who are ignoring lockdown are not just risking themselves, they are infecting people who are on essential missions and key workers as well as putting strain on NHS and prolonging the length of this pandemic. The state does have this right and it is for everyone’s protection not a choice to either be responsible or selfish.
I am amazed at the lack of responsibility from the public, I honestly believe that people are becoming complacent towards the situation and this will only cause more illness and prolong the lock down.
Unfortunately I have had to enter two shops in Ryde today and although shops have markings on the floor for social distancing people just are not taking any notice and there is no one around to enforce this. I don’t believe people are shopping for essential items either judging by some of the items being purchased. These rules have been put in place for a reason and people must realize this, 20319 deaths is not something to be ignored, follow the social distancing guidelines and respect Everybody’s space.
you are also part of the public Andy and added to your perceived issue, by being in the shops yourself – in someone else’s eyes, they will see you as part of the problem and not giving a toss about anyone else by being out.
Thank you for raising this … unfortunately no investigations into this and no action from those with authority!
They’re definitely not coming to Sandown – it’s like a ghost town here. I may just be looking at the wrong time but, looking over to Shanklin, that beach is empty too.
No-one out in the bay either so those dinghies must all be going elsewhere.
The people with backpacks may have been going on a long walk away from other people in the countryside. The latest guidance allows that and the law has never forbidden it.
As for they queue of traffic, the reduced sailings mean that even with reduced numbers of passengers the ferries are still nowhere near empty.
Don’t quite understand your point about the people coming into the country unchecked though – the virus is already here., the time for routine screening was several weeks ago.
Well said. What is the point of us staying in we may aswell do what we want too when the ferries are bringing over virus infested holiday makers and the government are STILL letting flights in unchecked. There is no point in this pretend lockdown
worried, could you be mistaken, because this is what Bob Seely was quoted as saying the other day when the ferry operators got a big bailout from government, and I believe what our MP says!
“I would like to reassure Islanders that this does not mean that visitors will now be coming to the Island. It means that cross-Solent ferry operators can maintain a lifeline service which also meets the requests of the IOW NHS Trust.”
Are you asking (“Stay at home in Ryde”) if I was mistaken about the fact that I saw, quite plainly with my own eyes, cars going up the hill in East Cowes on Thursday, one with an upturned canoe tied to its roof, and another with an upturned dinghy on its roof? And backpackers going around with metal mugs hanging from their backpacks and them looking around as if not familiar with where they were?
If that is what you are asking, then the answer is: No, I was not mistaken.
If I’d been quicker off the mark, I suppose I could have made a video of what I saw and then posted it somewhere online and then posted a link to it so people could see for themselves.
Where are the police I once again ask I rang my work colleague to see if she was ok and she said her husband had gone to pick up a second hand hoover; I pointed out it was wrong and she just laughed!! The mentality of some people!!
Very sad news., over 25% of covid cases reported on the isle of wight have now passed away. please keep safe everyone
Fed up of seeing people being so stupid and just being plain irresponsible and ignorant to the situation, nothing will go back to even an ounce of normality until everyone gets on board and starts to follow the guidelines that have been set for very good reason.
How many deaths will it take for people to suddenly realise the severity of this pandemic?
I honestly do not think the country nor the world infact will ever be the same again so people will need to accept and adapt to a different way of life for a very long time.
Back to 50/50 chance of survival then if taken into hospital with CV.
Are these terrible odds the UK average?
WHY are people still coming here from the mainland? I think an email to Bob Seely is what is needed, though he just sits in the middle and refuses to acknowledge what is really going on. This so called ‘lockdown’ is a joke. This situation is going to continue and people will lose their lives due to the clowns in Westminster not being strict enough.
The island mp wont bother replying iv tried you will just get a reply in a few weeks from one of his under dogs
Agree! Island MP never bothers replying to any emails or phone calls about anything! I would have thought it would be very easy to stop anyone travelling on the ferries for non-essential reasons. I haven’t seen any clear reassurance from the Isle of Wight Council or the police about this. Has anyone else?
People are clearly out and about today – perhaps because they can’t be in their gardens in the rain? I really have no idea where they are going or what they are doing but there is a lot of traffic noise outside – every single vehicle is speeding – pretty much like any pre-lockdown day.
I feel let down. I don’t feel safe. I stay inside with the exception of essential care (medication, food) for a friend at the end of life with cancer.
Neighbours all have friends and families in – Saturday a few doors away they had a barbeque. I feel as though I can’t do anything as I am the only person within 7 houses sticking to the rules. They would know it was me if I made a report!
I have no idea what other people are thinking or how they justify their actions. Surely they must realise that if they think it is okay for them to do whatever they like then other people will do too!
I am also the only person who claps for frontline workers!
I honestly don’t understand – if anyone else does please fill me in!
In their 80s and underlying health conditions so would have died soon anyway but the government will list this as two more Corona deaths to keep us all locked up forever
Total infected 86, 21 deaths.
21÷by 86×100=24.4% death rate.
This is in stark contrast to the stated international death rate at the outset of between 1to 2%.
ALSO remember that deaths in care homes, of which we have a disproportionately large proportion, are not included in these figures.
We residents of this island demand answers to these alarming figures.
– Stop covering up and give us the truth.
@stephen – once again you are not looking at the full picture. The island is seeing a much lower rate of cases heading to hospital than other areas. This means only the worst are showing up at the hospital and it stands to reason, that if we are only seeing a lower percentage of really bad cases at the hospital, the death rate for this very small category, presented in percentage terms will show higher.
When you add in the full spectrum of cases, which includes those not diagnosed, those not symptomatic, those not bothering to go to the hospital and those exposed but not caught it, that figure of 24% drops to less then one hundredth of one percent of the population of the island, as a whole.
How you can even contemplate putting your name to a post, with figures, that only displays a miniscule part of the overall picture and skews the figure to create an alarmist and headline grabbing number, is beyond me.
Can you clarify please. Did the people die from COVID19 or did they die and also test positive for COVID19. Those are very different things and should be made clear for accurate reporting and data collection
I am as concerned as the next as to the situation we are in . Comments regarding holiday makers etc are they based on fact or supposition? My wife and I have a business in the Old Village and we have not as yet seen an abundance of “holiday makers ” Not that we are open hasten to say but we Check our premises regularly. Think it might be prudent of the keyboard warrior brigade to check facts before posting what they think is breaking news. Just saying.
Shanklin has seemed rather busy the past couple of days. People need to stay home.
I don’t know about Shanklin but people are mainly out to buy food or for exercise, including the dog. Some need to visit the bank to withdraw money, which for me entails a trip to Newport to transfer money from a savings account to my current account, (running low on funds).
It’s easy to order people to stay in, whilst not providing their essentials…
I was hanging my net curtains in my bedroom yesterday afternoon and a huge white camper van went past my house.
Don’t know if it was coming or going. Might have been something innocent. But why would an islander be driving it around.
If it was coming I thought Bob Sealy had spoken to the police over the water at the ferry terminals to stop holiday makers coming here.
That what I read somewhere.
It was huge certainly too big for one person.
My son who’s on the mainland who works shifts said no matter what time he takes their dog out for her daily exercise there’s always loads of people around flouting the lockdown. Said he spends more time avoiding people than walking in a straight line.
My son and daughter-in-law are both key workers. Makes him really angry. Said there’s loads of people just taking the piss.
Everything that people are doing to follow the rules is wiped out by. I can’t repeat what he said , I’ll be deleted.
But like I said to him. You CANNOT educate a moron. Sad and scary but unfortunately true.
If the lockdown rules get more severe the people who flouted them and caused it would be the biggest screamers from their rooftops because they still wouldn’t know what they did wrong.
All we can do is follow the rules and try as individuals to keep ourselves safe.
The loss of life here small numbers compared to the mainland but devastating none the less.
One is too many, twenty one is a tragedy.
Islander, well said.
Sunday afternoon as I type this and I do not live on a main road yet cars constantly going by, and as soon as I step outside for some exercise I am forever trying to avoid people, even in the evening, they just don’t seem to take any notice.
The white campervan might be their only vehicle (or indeed they might be fulltimers) or they might be running it to get fuel or to charge the battery…..
Not necessarily a holidaymaker, especially as all the campsites are closed and have been for weeks.
I know of someone who drives from eastcowes to ashey just to walk her dog very selfish breaking the rules
It’s lawful to drive to exercie, always has been. That why we’re seeing more cars on the road because its slowly dawning on some people they can
Well it maybe bending the rules a bit, but it’s not relevant to the spreading of the virus.
She won’t be coming into close proximity with people whilst out in the country, which she probably would be in East Cowes.
So I think it’s better not to accuse people or insult them; better by far to just be concerned with what we are doing ourselves..
It’s not selfish, but sensible to go out to the countryside to exercise, especially with dogs, as you can then maintain greater social distancing between people than you can on the narrow pavements and alleys in town.
The censor keeps witholding my comment on this.
– So much for free speech !!
Have written it twice, but perhaps he is not in agreement, so he’s using his Authority..
Have no faith in this site anymore.
Stephen, there are three comments here from you, one after another. It doesn’t look as though anything is missing.
Remember it takes a while for something to appear permanently on the site. It is there awaiting moderation for a while, (and in that state can still be edited. which is useful if you see mistakes or spelling errors or typos) then it disappears for a little while, and then it appears permanently.
I think the only time comments may disappear after they’ve been published is if people complain and object for some reason, then they may get deleted. But I should think there would have to be a very good reason and I can’t see anything you have said that would be objected to enough for the comment to be removed.
Always wait a while, sometimes a few hours, before presuming a comment has been blocked, and you will probably see it there later.
I am not understanding the logic of people in general. We are in a lock down, yet everyday since last week my road in Newport that we pay for a yearly parking permit for, was packed out with cars. The amount of people I’ve seen coughing their guts up, gives me cause for concern too. Why are there so many cars? If the boats are still running and people have some how gotten over here on their holidays, why bother then with a lock down? The backward thinking and utter stupidity of people in general. I work in the care field and work nights, so I don’t relish coming home to no where to park. I don’t go out anywhere else, I go to work go home, go to work, go home etc, etc. I know it’s frustrating for some to be in lock down, I have always been a hermit, never have since the early two thousands been out socializing. I can find plenty to do inside and away from everyone else. I am a Islander born and raised here, now in my late forties and have turned into Victor Meldrew, because I do not and never will understand the logic of others and the stupid risks people take in their lives.
There will be more cases of corona here on the Island and no doubt even more reported deaths, the lock down will go on for many more months, yet somehow people have got it in their brains that it is safe to go out, it is not. You do not even have to be close to someone who sneezes or coughs in your direction, if you touch any hard surface, then touch your face, you can get it. It’s even on your shoes and I hope that you are all still taking precautions, because this is only the first round of this virus. Every time you go shopping, or walking around town you are putting yourselves at risk. This virus I reckon could turn to a completely different strain altogether, for all we know? Take heed of what our Government tells us each day. At work and at home I wash my hands with soap and hot water, at least thirty to forty times a night, because of what I am exposed to in my job. I’m not exposed to the corona virus, but I deal with personal care, through out the night and I as a carer have to protect myself. The same applies in the everyday lock down we are facing at the moment, only use sanitizers if you are somewhere where there is no hot water or soap. Never ever rely solely on sanitizers, as they are only a barrier and for a short period too. The amount of sanitizers that were bought at the beginning of the outbreak, was just ludicrous, then you had people selling them on the Internet for fifty pounds upwards, insane prices. Then toilet roll was hard to get, as people were panic buying. The problem is , is that people will always try to break the rules, but for many it is boredom, as to why they take such risks. What I’m trying to get across is that it is not over yet, yet people are acting like it is and it has to stop.
