UPDATED: Multiple Police units and the National Police Air Service helicopter are in attendance in Shorwell this afternoon (Tuesday) following the attempted robbery of the village post office.
Police have confirmed that no money or goods have been stolen in the incident, which occurred just after 12:15. The offender, who is thought to be male, has fled the scene.
A local dog unit is currently searching the fields surrounding the property on Farriers Way whilst the Police helicopter flies overhead.
UPDATE @ 13:50 – Forensic officers are collecting evidence from the surrounding area this afternoon whilst detectives gather statements from those involved.
No one is thought to have been harmed during the attempted robbery, which has left the close-knit community in shock.
Police units including the NPAS helicopter have now left the scene.
It is too early to establish if today’s incident is connected with robberies at Co-Operative stores in the East Wight, or the theft of safes from pubs on the Island.
The village store has been closed for the day.
UPDATE WEDNESDAY: Police have arrested 3 teenagers in connection to the attempted robbery of Shorwell Stores yesterday.
A 19-year-old male from Sandown remains in Police custody at Newport Police Station this morning as detectives question him over the incident.
A 16-year-old male from Ryde and a 16-year-old male from Newport have been bailed until 7th June, pending further enquiries.
It is unknown at this stage if this incident is being linked with any other recent robberies and thefts on the Island.
