Pavers in Newport has announced that it is going to close for good later this month. The shock news was announced to the 8 employees of the popular shoe shop last week. Island Echo understands that the shop’s lease on the building, located in Towngate Retail Park, is due to expire and the rent was due to increase. Due to the last-minute nature of the announcement, bosses at Pavers have been unable to find an alternative site, however, Island Echo understands that they are seeking alternative premises should one become available. Located in what used to be home to fellow shoe retailer Brantano, Pavers had been trading in Newport for some 8 years. Pavers will close for the final time on Tuesday 30th April.

So we’ll have an empty premises for months-years because the faceless investors that own the building, are so short sighted they’d rather see it empty than maintain the current rent.
Ideal for Tesco
It’s too big for an ‘Express’ trading area needs to below a certain size for sunday trading laws. Too small to be a ‘Extra’ – so most likley not.
the shop’s lease on the building, located in Towngate Retail Park, is due to expire and the rent was due to increase.
…
greedy landlord has shot itself in the foot – no rent coming in at all
I expect an easily obtainedchange of use ‘ application and several flats crammed with benefit breeders will soon recoup the loss.
Hardly. It’s classed as a retail park and to change the use all the others would have to also close down. Can’t see Halfords going anytime soon, can you?
Don’t want to put my foot in it, but it was only a matter of time.
Sadly another one bites the dust.
Oh no, looks like I’m going to have to get my shoes off Amazon or StockX
That’s funny.. that’s what I do anyway…
Such a clever little person you are, I’m sure your little statement pleases your peanut of a brain. My thoughts are for the people who are going to lose their jobs.
jobcentre’s open. Not my problem.
What a delightful person you are! I do think there should be a requirement for photos with name’s here. Not sure you’d have the balls to make such comment’s then…
Make any more remarks like that and I’ll put you on daily sign-on
And my thoughts are going towards getting a Stone Island jacket because I’m not some poor working in a shoe shop
And herein lies the issue. We’re ALL guilty, or a vast majority of us are at least. This has crept up on us and we didn’t even notice it happening.
Online retail and large chains have all contributed to the demise of small independent retailers. But most of us allowed this to happen for the sake of saving a few quid. If only we could have seen into the future, maybe things would be different?
The sad thing is that it is probably irreversible now. I’d say we’re probably in the second if not the third generation of online shoppers… high street retail is being squeezed in every direction.
NEver heard of it…. Didn’t even know it was there
Sometimes it doesn’t pay to be greedy hope the probably mainland based company have a massive financial loss and have to maintain the premises at their expense and not local Council.
Went in there a while ago to buy shoes for work, the shop was huge but half empty anyway. Waste of the space really. Time to add a different shop to Newport that people may actually use.
Food bank?
No! A charity shop
What to put in the empty Pavers shop? The business that seem to be thriving in this cost of living crisis are nail bars, tattoo parlours, vape shops and betting shops.
You forgot barber shops.
Spoke to the staff this morning, seems the landlords are TREBLING the rent! Cost of living crisis – what cost of living crisis?
The one some industries seem to be profiteering from, like investment companies which bought up whole swathes of building premises.
Yet another shop having to close due to high rental costs
“they are seeking alternative premises should one become available.”
Have a walk down the high street!
Don’t forget the hideously expensive business rates levied onto them by our council. No wonder they’ve closed, I’m amazed anyone can afford to run a business in any of our high streets. The last weeks of conservative rule will see things getting much worse as they will apply maximum damage to all of us before they get the boot.
Greedy landlord’s yet again
