An eye-catching mural, celebrating the Isle of Wight’s historical industrial innovations and iconic wildlife, could be added to the side of the Columbine Building in East Cowes. Plans have been unveiled for a 2-part mural to be painted onto the side of the famous ‘Union Flag’ building by local artist Alice Malia. The 1st image would bring the white-tailed sea eagles to life — clutching a fish from the water — following the successful reintroduction of the birds of prey to the Island. The 2nd part incorporates the history of the Columbine Building and Venture Quays over the last century, in a blue monotone style. The seaside site has been used for boat building, as early as the 1830s, and the production of aircraft, including the Black Arrow Rocket, seaplanes and hovercrafts. The mural would span the length of the wall — roughly 70m wide by 12m tall.
The wall has recently been uncovered, after being hidden for decades, following the demolition of the neighbouring Medina Shed workshop. Planning documents, submitted by the Isle of Wight Council which is behind the proposal, say the current wall is an ugly industrial blot in the core of the town and the mural would enhance the view. It says the artwork would give both visitors and residents an informative and enjoyable experience, and create a memorial to the craft created in the area. The final design of the artwork is still being developed. Other pieces of art created by Alice Malia are already on show around the Island, with large pieces in the centre of Newport, along Post Office Lane and the High Street. You can view the plans, 24/00109/FUL, on the Isle of Wight Council’s planning register. Comments can be submitted until 1st March.

It would have been nice to see something like this on the new wall of white alongside Ryde Pier Head station.
I don’t see this as an ugly industrial blot at all, it’s a good honest factory building where things are made. Yes, things have to be made somewhere and for marine industries it’s a good location so let’s not try to disguise it as if we are somehow ashamed that we are still hanging on to our construction skills.
The Isle of Wight is not famous for historical industrial innovations and iconic wildlife. Instead, the mural should feature dodgem cars, slot machines, candy floss, caravans, and drunk Londoners.
If the Isle of Wight council are behind this planning application does the council own this property. ?
Who will be paying for it.?
Taxpayers.?
Painting pictures on the side of an historical building is OK, but youths painting pictures on the sides of bus shelters and trains is frowned upon.?
I can only assume that if you call yourself an artist and can describe a badly made clay foot that you are selling as ‘it has just lifted itself from the sticky sand at the waters edge’ then you’ve hit the jackpot in life..
Isle of Wight Council submitting planning documents to Isle of Wight Council! What is the chance of it being rejected?
IWC squandering cash as usual and then they will be squealing when they have spent it all. The council should provide essential services and that is all. I don’t want this mural and demand the return of the proportion of my council tax that will be wasted on it.
Let’s hope there is a red squirrel in the mural
There is a time and a place for public art and lets face it we are not over endowed with that sort of thing. I understand Banksy was coming over but then he saw the ferry prices.
But I object to the idea that our industrial heritage represents some kind of eyesore that has to be disguised..
