A crash at a crossroads on the main road between Newport and Yarmouth is causing traffic delays this afternoon (Monday). Emergency service personnel were called to the scene at Vittlefields at around 16:30 following reports of a crash at the junction of Forest Road, Whitehouse Road and Betty Haunt Lane. Island Echo understands that a vehicle attempting to turn up Whitehouse Road has collided with a vehicle heading towards Forest Road. Traffic in the area is very busy, with a road closure on Middle Road causing traffic to get very congested in the Carisbrooke and Gunville areas. A total of 3 cars were damaged in the smash with 1 of the drivers suffering a minor injury, Police have confirmed. The road was blocked for a time until the vehicles were recovered by Bartletts.

Many more idiots will be along soon…..Car’s don’t crash themselves…
Not everyone involved in an accident is an idiot, innocent victim more like.
Love this bit of road and can quite often get a ton twenty plus along here. You less experienced drivers old drivers and female drivers need to slow down before we see a crash here. Oh wait a minute………beep beep see you laterz.
When are the council going to sort this junction, they have said for ages it will be. I hope nobody today was hurt
Hundreds of people use this junction every day without crashing. It’s people that need sorting out!
It’s not a problem with the junction. The problem is people’s impatience. They will not wait until the road is clear. They just cannot judge spead correctly and cross infront of oncoming cars because they’re too impatient.
The Council could not organise a p*ss up in a brewery
Useless B’stards
There’s nothing wrong with the junction, it’s the impatient idiots on the roads. I don’t know what happened but, the junction is NOT the problem.
Does it really need sorting or may be drivers are a bit more careful when driving and take more note of other road users to stop accidents happen. Slow down when approach any junction that’s all. There’s a lot of anger on roads in the uk.
Probably drink drugs mobile phone lack of concentration so much on the island now. You take your life in your hands every time you get behind the wheel. Oh and also too many people heavy on the right foot tailgating slow down you muppets.
Traffic lights, how many times until the council wakes up. This junction is dangerous.
Not if people look and don’t drive like idiots
No. No no no no. Just no! Simply no. Traffic lights are not needed. Whilst there have been several accidents at that junction each and every one has been down to negligent/careless driving. I believe totally and utterly the council have a duty of care but traffic lights are the easy way out and not the option.
Cut back the hedges (which they were supposed to be doing); better signage; make each of the corners a “sweeping bend” which improves visibility. These measures could be completed in a very short space of time (if the powers that be cut through the red tape and bickering). Traffic lights or a mini roundabout are not the answer.
I agree. It would also be a good idea to replace the “Give Way – 140 (?)m” sign with one that puts a more realistic value of about 50m on it. Visitors will think they are a lot further from the junction than they really are.
Secondly, the corners are far too sharp, If the kerb stones would be moved back to the line that the lorry wheels have carved out, it would be possible to turn without getting too close to oncoming traffic on Forest Road and also accelerate away properly to get to the speed of traffic from behind,
This is not rocket science, and it shouldn’t be too costly either. But it is probably not written into the “contract” that the Council agreed with Island Roads.
That junction is best avoided
Why? There are lots of other junctions. Is it because drivers are not observant?
The junction is not dangerous it’s people not looking
My guess is speeding is the cause, it’s rife on the island.
You guessed wrong, speed was not involved.
Too many young drivers on the road, terrifying!
Too many old drivers on the road, even more terrifying!!
Some years ago I was driving towards Yarmouth when a car shot across me from Whitehouse Road into Betty Haunt lane, non-stop at around 40mph. Though I was shocked at the time and then thought it was probably a tourist from Thorness Holiday Village. In his defence travelling southwards on Whitehouse Road, the hedgerows all the way down blend in with the hedgerows of Betty Haunt Lane and can leave a mainland driver to think it is all one road. The giveway sign was half in the hedge and the white lines faded and to a non-Islander sort of forgivable. No to traffic lights. These cause congestion and entice more speed to make up lost time for the ferries. Clear some hedge ways and a more open junction and clear signage should suffice…
Don’t island roads have…I think its called
“A duty of care” towards it users (us)!!!
I’m not clued up if these things, but if so then they are failing, massively. Are roads
have never been great, but they definitely are not good. I feel a change is needed.
Short answer: No.
Island Roads are responsible for the maintenance of the roads etc only.
Any additional safety measures have to be implemented by the local council.
There was a petition raised for traffic lights to be installed on that junction after a fatality but it was rejected.Perhaps it needs a rethink.
More shit driving always bad there even after deaths a couple years back ..nothing gets done..useless pathetic council…
You claim its bad driving, then blame the council.
Which is it?
Due Care and attention again nothing wrong with that junction it’s a straight road bloody look and if not sure wait it’s not rocket science . People are just stupid and inpatient these days ,no indication where there going overtaking on corners and don’t give way
If more than two vehicles were involved at least one was two close to another.
was literally in the car that was hit, it wasn’t a young drivers fault, it wasn’t speeding that junction is awful and an older gentleman decided to change his mind about letting someone go. So easy to judge when you don’t even know what happened and this news article helps nobody
Island echo commenters, why let the facts get in the way of you expressing your bias and bigoted ideas. It was a simple accident. The clue is in the name, accident. No incompetent ‘young’ driver or half dead ‘old boomer’ needed. Sometimes accidents just happen.
