Residents are fighting back at a ‘dreadful overdevelopment’ that would be ‘insensitive’ to the natural cemetery behind it and the landscape surrounding it.
Developers JR Buckett and Son are seeking permission of the Isle of Wight Council to add more houses to an approved development on Alum Bay New Road in Totland Bay.
Permission has been previously been granted for 6 houses but residents are opposing the addition of 2 more, as well as increases of the size and height of houses as well.
One resident of the road said in their submission:
“The previously approved scheme had a better mix of bedroom numbers and would have offered a greater range of accommodation to meet housing need in the West Wight.”
2x 3-bed and 6x 4-bed houses are proposed to be built on the land which is next to the Headon Lea Natural Burial Ground.
Totland Parish Council and the Isle of Wight branch of the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE IW) have also objected to the development as it ‘packs’ units into the site, leading to a ‘cramped’ appearance.
CPRE IW said:
“The application is within the setting of an iconic landscape, and due to the design, the negative impact does not outweigh the benefits of the additional units proposed.”
Island Roads has given the site conditional approval but residents fear the extra vehicle entry points on the road will potentially be dangerous.
The public consultation on the application has now finished and the Isle of Wight Council will determine its outcome.

The fact these proposed homes will be aimed at wealthy retirees or second homes for the wealthy and doubtful any will be affordable due to location. The compact nature of the development will be an absolute eyesore and the driveways been on the crest of the hill is dangerous. the insensitive nature with regard to Headon lea cemetery and the beautiful countryside and wildlife that many people enjoy will be destroyed forever and if it gets the go ahead it opens the flood gates for the greedy money driven unscrupulous developers to destroy this beautiful landscape for thier own gain. because once its gone its gone forever. And yes I’ve objected and everyone can comment on the planning section of the iow council website.
It will never stop. Not until the Island looks like Tokyo. 🙁
It will only stop if WE stop it. Elections next year, unless Bozo takes fright.
Twinned with Africa would be more fitting, not Tokyo, over populated, children queuing for food parcels, growing drugs, child abuse and knife crime and few jobs.
Shame we don’t have their Sunny climate.
Happy to see Ryde ruined though, bet they couldn’t care about this area.
Ensure YOU vote this council out at the next chance, don’t expect others to do so.
Has Bob Seely protested about this, of course not.
I am assuming this council will vote for the 2 additional units.
But what are the odds the builder then applies for even more?
It seems to be the norm now. Builders get their planning permission and sneak back in with additional houses or flats. It happened in Atherley Road and the former Bay House both in Shanklin.. Its all about the money sadly. I would like know where these people will work, where their kids will go to school. God help them if they need to see a doctor, dentist or need hospital treatment….
Very surprised that a good old Island firm is involved in this desecration
Keep builders busy good on them
Totland is one of the nicest places on the island, over developing will once more spoil it all
