Plans to transform an area of land in Cowes into a luxurious waterfront complex have been given the green light by the Isle of Wight Council’s Planning Committee.
Harrison Trust now have full approval for Phase 1 of their redevelopment scheme at Medina Yard, which will include the building up to 256 residential properties as well as retail, food and office space.
However, the Council have stipulated that Phase 1 of the major building work must take place at the same time as Phase 4, which focuses on the marine industry. Permission is yet to be granted for Phase 4 so Islanders won’t see any diggers on site just yet.
Outline permission has also been given for Phases 2 and 3. Together with Phases 1 and 4, the scheme will pave the way for up to 535 residential properties and a further 18,630sqm of commercial space as well as re-construction of the seawall, a new public slipway, new open space areas, a new riverside walkway and cycleway.
Councillor Wayne Whittle, Cabinet member for business development and regeneration welcomed the news:
“These proposals show how attractive the Isle of Wight is to the investment and development community.
“The plans for Medina Yard are an exciting mix of new housing and employment in an area of Cowes that is long overdue some improvement
“This clearly shows the enabling role this council will continue to play with others as well as delivering our own regeneration ambitions.”
