A Ryde man who walked into a supermarket before leaving with 4 bottles of champagne he didn’t pay for has been ordered to pay compensation of £172 to the Co-op.
Stephen Durkin, 43, of Union Street in Ryde, admitted theft from a shop when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court earlier this week (1st October).
Prosecuting, Lauren McConnell, told the court that on the 18th August, Durkin entered The Co-op store on Anglesea Street in Ryde and placed 4x bottles of champagne in his shopping basket.
Durkin then proceeded to walk out of the store making no attempt to pay. The stolen goods – which were never recovered – were valued at £172.
The court heard how Durkin has a total of 16 convictions for 40 offences.
Defending Durkin, Jim Osborne said that his client deserved full credit for his early plea of guilt and that at the time of the offence, Durkin’s mental health was suffering following the breakdown of his relationship.
Magistrates ordered Durkin to pay compensation of £172. He was also fined £40 and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £16 surcharge fee.
