Police have confirmed that the man involved in Sunday’s dramatic stand-off at a Sandown petrol station was detained under Section 136 of the Mental Health Act.
Armed Police and other local officers were called to the Esso garage on Avenue Road shortly before 19:00 following reports of a man armed with a weapon.
During the incident, the man was said to be threatening to pour petrol over himself, prompting staff inside the adjoining Co-op store to lock themselves inside for their own safety.
Following negotiations with officers, the situation was brought to a peaceful conclusion, and the man was safely detained. A weapon was also seized.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has now confirmed that the individual was detained under Section 136 of the Mental Health Act and taken to St Mary’s Hospital for further assessment and care.
No injuries to members of the public or emergency services were reported.
Section 136 gives police powers to remove a person from a public place to a place of safety if they appear to be suffering from a mental health disorder and are considered to be at immediate risk.
