1 person has been killed and another has been hospitalised – reportedly after being stabbed in the stomach – following an ‘altercation’ at an address in Shanklin last night (Monday), leading to a full-blown murder investigation being launched.
Forensic investigators have spent the day conducting an examination of the crime scene at an address on St John’s Road, where a man in his 50s was found with fatal injuries shortly after 22:10.
It has now been confirmed that a second man, a 36-year-old from the Isle of Wight, was also found with injuries at the address and is 1 of 3 suspects arrested on suspicion of murder. Island Echo understands he suffered stab wounds and was rushed to St Mary’s Hospital by ambulance, where he remains under Police guard.
As first reported by Island Echo, Armed Police were deployed to Shanklin when Hampshire Constabulary’s Force Control Room was alerted to the serious incident, but Police haven’t commented on what exactly prompted the heavy response. Medics from both the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service and Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance were also scrambled to the scene, but nothing could be done to save the middle-aged man’s life.
Detectives investigating the murder have been questioning 3 people – a 29-year-old woman, a 52-year-old woman and a 36-year-old man. The 2 women remain in Police custody at Newport Police Station on suspicion of murder as enquiries continue to establish the circumstances of the death. The 36-year-old is detained in hospital.
A cordon remains in place around the property as investigations continue, but St John’s Road has now re-opened to motorists and pedestrians.
Superintendent Jim Pegler has said:
“I know that this incident will be a shock to the local community. I would like to reassure people that there are no wider risks to the public, and we believe this is an isolated and contained incident.
“Detective Chief Inspector Ross Toms has been appointed as the Senior Investigating Officer and he will lead a thorough investigation to establish what has happened, involving specialist officers from Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.
“I would ask people not to speculate on the circumstances and the identities of those involved. If you have any concerns or information, please report this directly to police on 101 quoting 44220162095, or anonymously by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
