87-year-old Ian Kerley, one of the first people on the Isle of Wight to receive the COVID-19 vaccine, is encouraging others to also have the vaccination following his positive experience earlier this week.
Ian, from Carisbrooke, was invited along to Carisbrooke Health Centre on Tuesday afternoon where he was supported by his wife, Maria.
The retired builder was vaccinated just hours after the first doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine arrived on the Isle of Wight. The first person to receive the vaccine was 98-year-old RAF Veteran and great-grandfather Kenneth Killeen, as previously reported by Island Echo.
Speaking about his experience Ian said:
“I wasn’t nervous about having the vaccination and I felt really good about it.
“You can feel the needle a little bit, but apart from that it was all fine.
“I have felt quite fortunate as during lockdown I’ve spent time with my wife and have a comfortable home. I know it’s not been the same for all older people though. So I would encourage people to have the vaccination if it helps things get back to normal.”
Maria added:
“This is one of the happiest days of my life and I am so happy my husband has been able to have the vaccination.
“So many people have died because of this virus and this feels like the light at the end of the tunnel.”

Let’s hope there is light at the end of the tunnel.
Read the recent news about the Nurses in Alaska who had the Vaccine!
Is there light at the end of the tunnel!
And one ended up in ICU…
Allergic reaction which can happen with absolutely anything.
3150 people unable to perform normal daily activities, unable to work, required care from doctor or health care professional having received the vaccine. This just the first dose. The second is known to be worse.
Too risky to have.
No news of Bojo having the Vacc, his Dad is 80
Will he have one!
I know of four people who have had an allergic reaction. Based on the numbers that have been vaccinated that is a very low incidence rate. If they same number had caught covid there would be hundreds dead and many more with life long lung damage.
I am ready and waiting for my vaccine. 🙂
So I would encourage people to have the vaccination if it helps things get back to normal.”
normality may be the last thing on peoples minds, if they get reactions to this in six months or a years time.
rushed out vaccine – never a good idea being first.
For a virus with a 99.06% rate of survival…and with an experimental vaccine with a MRNA protein in it.I would rather have my freedom with the risks, not this totalitarian nanny state thank you!
Yes but unless it gets under control you won’t have your freedom
You are prepared to give away your liberties for a virus.. really ?
It has not been rushed. A lot of the work for the vaccine has been done in the last ten years for the SARs virus. Also, as I explained before, they drugs companies overlapped a lot of the testing taking on a big financial risk. Normally the test phases are done in sequence. This vaccine is safe. Stop making crap up, you are putting peoples life’s at risk. If someone listens to what you say and does not take it and then dies of covid their blood in on your hands.
Just you wait Ian!!! Roll up… roll up ….Gullable gov brainwashed form an orderly que here.
So where is it then ? Heard nothing so far.
Rushed vaccine no real testing no thanks
Plus will still have to wear masks socially distance and put up with lockdowns for years so no point
Both lies. Seriously why do you keep peddling these lies?
It has been tested on tens of thousands of people.
It has to undergo rigorous safety checks before it can be recommended for widespread use.
In Phase 1 and Phase 2 clinical trials, vaccines are tested in small numbers of volunteers to check they are safe and to determine the right dose.
In Phase 3 trials they are tested in thousands of people to see how effective they are. The group who received the vaccine and a control group who have received a placebo are closely monitored for any adverse reactions – side-effects. Safety monitoring continues after a vaccine has been approved for use.
Fred … the ‘data’ you are repeating like a parrot is what the government told you and if you care to chart it back one stage it is what Pfizer told the government. Jeez.
The vaccine has not been given ‘approval’ – it has been given EMERGENCY approval after a few months of a TWO YEAR trial because an alleged ‘virus’ with an official 99.6% recovery rate is considered so deadly that the vaccine must be given the go-ahead before it is in any way properly tested.
Wake up Fred for good sake or join Naivety Anonymous.
How many people have had the vaccine on the island, what happesn to the spare vaccine if people dont turn up for their appointment.
Mr Kerley is perfectly fine after the first dosis.
Only to remain negationists are putting the rest in danger of death by refusing to protect themselves.
Respect to so many thousand of people passing away because of the virus
