Life saving volunteers in Ryde and Newport are appealing for more people to join them, and will be holding an open evening on Thursday for people to find out more.
The Isle of Wight’s St John Ambulance adult units provide first aid at public events, such as the Vectis Minis Rugby Festival, Cowes Week fireworks display and the Isle of Wight Challenge, and help train other people in the community.
The Ryde unit meets every Wednesday evening and the Newport unit meets every Thursday evening. Both groups would like more local people aged over 18 to get involved and become a volunteer first aider.
Anyone interested in volunteering can go along to the open evening between 18:00 and 20:30 on Thursday 15th February at the Newport Unit: St John Ambulance, 12 Manners View, Dodnor Park, Newport, PO30 5FA.
No previous experience is needed, full training will be given free of charge, and volunteering is flexible so people can give time in a way that suits them.
St John Ambulance District Events Lead, Michael Hine, said:
“We hope there are many more people living on the Isle of Wight who would be interested in learning to save lives as a St John Ambulance volunteer. Of course, those first aid skills aren’t just used when they’re at local events. Learning first aid means they’re equipped to help family and friends at home, work or anywhere else that an emergency happens. They can be the difference between a life lost and a life saved, and it’s an extremely rewarding way of giving back to your local community.”
