3 finalists in this year’s Soldiering On Awards are dogs including Baxter who is the Canine Partner of disabled Isle of Wight veteran Jonathan Giemza-Pipe.
The Animal Partnership Award honours the unique relationships and companionship provided by animals that support and empower members of the Armed Forces community. The winner of this award will be chosen through a public vote that closes on Sunday 6th August.
Islander Jonathon Giemza-Pipe was medically discharged in 2016 after 22 years in the Army, and really struggled to regain direction in his life. During the early days of his rehabilitation a therapist suggested he apply for an Assistance Dog. The process was long and, at times, Jonathon feared it would come to nought.
However, nothing could have prepared him for the incredible impact his canine partners would have on his life! Baxter (and his predecessor Toby) changed Jonathon’s entire outlook, and it’s in no small part thanks to them that he was able to get back on track.
Jonathon decided that he wanted to help other veterans navigate their mental health issues, and the Veterans’ Mental Health and Wellbeing Service, run by Berkshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, gave him the opportunity to put his experiences to good use as a Veterans’ Peer Support Worker.
Wherever he goes, Baxter is with him – from crossing by ferry from the Isle of Wight, to Veteran Drop-Ins in Bicester, he’s there! Without him, Jonathon says, he wouldn’t be doing what he is today – Baxter is chief confidant, stress reliever, best friend, and scourge of any carrots left lying around!
Islanders can vote for Baxter at https://soldieringon.org/animal-partnership-award-finalists-2023/ and, what’s more, every voter will be entered into a draw to win 2 tickets to the glittering award ceremony hosted by Jeremy Vine on 27th September, when the 2023 winners will be announced. The vote closes at 23:59 on Sunday 6th August.
All 3 furry finalists attended a private reception to celebrate the 36 finalists of the 2023 Soldiering On Awards at the House of Lords on 18th July. The reception at the prestigious Palace of Westminster was attended by the 36 finalists, their nominators, defence and government leaders and partners from military charities and big business.
All were present to pay tribute to the inspiring stories of endeavour and devotion to improving lives in the Armed Forces community. Senior British Army officer Major General Gerald Strickland DSO MBE addressed the room with praise for the achievements of the shortlisted individuals and organisations.
The awards, now in their 13th year, celebrate the very best of the Armed Forces community, across a diverse spectrum of twelve categories from Healthcare and Rehabilitation to Business of the Year and Animal Partnership. The Soldiering On Awards aim to shine a light on ordinary people doing extraordinary things.
