The Isle of Wight has ranked second in a list of locations in the UK in terms of how much is spent on staycations.
Since the easing of lockdown restrictions and the slow return of normality, people are beginning to venture back out into the world and are spending more money than ever, helping to get the economy back on its feet
However, some regions of the UK are thriving more than others. With everything still up in arms with traffic-light systems, there’s been an evident increase in Brits swapping flight tickets for petrol money.
Retail and recreation has seen a massive spike in activity in certain regions of the UK, especially in places that are able to facilitate us Brits with a much-needed staycation
The Island has beaten locations such as Torbay and Pembrokeshire to climb up the list, being beaten only by Cornwall. Mobility trends on the Isle of Wight have shown a huge 38% increase in retail and recreational activities in the past month making the Isle of Wight the most popular staycation spot for British holiday goers to spend their money!
These include spending money in places such as restaurants, cafés, shopping centres, theme parks, museums, and cinemas.
Mobility trends for places like national parks, public beaches, marinas, public gardens have also skyrocketed in the Isle of Wight as we enter the summer months, with a 156% increase from the baseline!
Despite these free activities having no direct effect on the bank balance of the average British holiday goer, where there are people, there is a need for food and drink. These open spaces act as a secondary cause to provide cafes and restaurants with their customers and will inevitably encourage us Brits to splash the cash.

IE do you not know that a staycation is what it says, a holiday spent at home. If people are travelling to a different area it is called a vacation quite simple really.
(The official definition of a staycation is where the person undertaking one remains in their home country)
Bad news for many of us who have always lived here and are worried about virus. Not everyone can have the vaccine.
We don’t want them coming here. Too crowded now thanks to being overbuilt. Roads will become a nightmare come the school summer recess.
Only their wallets are welcome and few of us gain from that.
Wait til everyone gets here and sees our traffic light systems at St Mary’s, Coppin’s and all the roadworks. They’ll wish they’d taken their chances abroad. You’ll spend less time in quarantine than queuing in traffic on the island. Especially if it’s raining for some reason, Newport gets gridlocked. WHY?!
Because the world and his wife get their cars out at the first hint of rain! Mac? Umbrella? Decent shoes? Walk? Are you kidding? (I’m a non driver BTW).
Exactly why … nothing to see in Newport that’s for sure only empty ridiculous cost to rent shops
