Wight Community Energy’s new Green Open Homes event is to see 6 ‘eco-friendly’ homes open the doors for public visits. The event – which is due to take place on 24th/25th February and 9th/10th March – will give people the opportunity to learn first-hand about heat pumps, solar panels, solar thermal, in-depth insulation schemes and high-tech sustainable design. There will be 3 renovated properties available to visit and 3 new builds, giving visitors the chance to learn about the different pathways to energy-efficient homes. The enthusiastic hosts will be able to explain the benefits of investing in low-energy renovation and design, while also pointing out some of the pitfalls to avoid! Event organiser Stephen Cockett says:
“It has been a real pleasure meeting the participating homeowners and visiting their homes. I really wish that I’d had the chance to speak to people on these topics before starting my own home renovation. “Of course, you can learn a huge amount online and from skilled installers, but nothing beats having conversations with those who have been through the process first-hand”
Visits can be booked through the following website. If you have an eco-home and you would like to share your experiences then it is not too late to take part as a host – contact [email protected] to find out more.

Noisy heat pumps. No thank you.
Should be banned.
I had a heat pump installed a couple of years ago and it is almost completely silent. We must all of us move towards more effecient and environmentally-friendly heating – and save ourselves a lot of money
Have any readers had heat pumps fitted and who fitted it for you? Did you have to get a mainland contractor?
A customer of mine was quoted 37grand to have an air source heat pump fitted, obviously wasn’t just the heat pump but was all the alterations to the house that our wonderful government don’t advertise, the 5 grand or what ever it is they give you dosnt go very far, and there’s a good chance it won’t work very well, stick with gas if you got it. It’s all smoke and mirrors, look at how many people have actually gone and had them fitted, that should answer any questions you have about them
So your attitude is fuck the planet! Wow. There are no trustworthy installers on the island that I can find (check out Google Reviews) and want to know who is good on the mainland.
Nope far from my attitude, I’m all up for saving this planet, but fitting a rubbish overpriced air source heat pump because our “honest” government tell you too is one of the stupidest things you can do! Just my opinion from a heating engineer with 40 years in the game, personally insulating houses well is the answer, I’ve been involved in passive housing on the mainland, if a property’s insulated well they really don’t need much heat, and modern gas boilers a super efficient and cheep in comparison, and you will find plenty of engineers to fix it, good luck getting a mainland firm back to fix an air source heat pump in the future! No one on the island is interested cause we know there rubbish just like electric cars.
Do I need to remind you that burning gas and petrol pumps carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, which is the main cause of ongoing global warming? The aim of all humans should be to eliminate fossil fuel usage. Idiots like you are stopping people from contributing to this aim.
Why are some people incapable of debating an issue, without resorting to insults and name-calling? It does nothing to further your cause.
I wish I could give you more than one ‘thumbs up’.
Where are these homes located so people know if local before enquiring further?
There is a link in the article to the website behind the project, looks like four around Niton and a couple near Shalfleet.
I don’t know about anyone else, but I find the advertisements on this site really ruin the experience for me. It makes it impossible to read the article and impossible to take the website seriously.
Interesting arguments however, considering the UK contribution to global warming is approximately 2% whilst China, India and the USA provide the “Lion Share” of CO2 output.
I’m all for doing our fair share towards reducing global pollution and agree we should reduce our pollution levels proportionally, the same applies to those producing the majority of GHG’s
Unfortunately, the current UK government has a bioptic, sledge hammer view of this, merely providing lip service at climate conferences.
