Bonchurch athlete Nick Percy broke his national discus record for a 3rd time this year in Cardiff on Saturday (11th June).
Nick 1st broke his own Scottish record in April with a throw of 63.47m in a competition in the United States. 3 weeks later, he added almost another metre with a throw of 64.35m. This Saturday, Nick again broke the Scottish national record at the Welsh Championships with a throw of 64.95m.
Nick is a former European junior silver medallist and 4-time British champion. For almost 6 years, his best throw had been 63.38m, set in 2016. He claimed fine tuning his training regime had helped him set his 3 new records.
Nick has shown his consistency over the 2022 season. Of his 17 competitive throws up to this weekend, 8 have been over 62m. His record breaking throws have seen him rise to 15th in the world rankings.
Selection for the Commonwealth Games, which begin on 28th July, is a target for Nick, as are the World Championships (from 15-24th July) and the European Championships (from 15-21st August).
27-year-old Nick was born in Glasgow and therefore competes for Scotland. However, he was educated at Ryde School and trained by the well-known Island athletics coach, the late Ray Scovell. He regularly practices at the Fairways Sports complex in Sandown.
Nick is known for having set up his own personal training facility in his parents’ garden in Bonchurch to enable himself to train during the Covid lockdown. He dubbed his improvised athletics field ‘the Percy Performance Centre’.
After winning the Welsh Championship on Saturday, Nick said:
“Another personal best and national record today to win my first Welsh title in Cardiff. A much-needed rebound after my last competition in Norway and with 2 weeks till the British Champs, I am feeling confident going into the Championship Season.”
