Vestas, Red Funnel and GKN Aerospace are among a variety of businesses opening their doors for people to find out more about career opportunities. Solent Partners Careers Hub, working with Island Careers Partnership, Isle of Wight College and HTP Apprenticeship College, are to run ‘Open for Business’ on the Isle of Wight on Saturday 23rd March. Free talks and tours will be held at a range of businesses across the Island to give an immersive, behind-the-scenes experience to young people looking to find out what sector they would like to work in, or for people finding out about work in a completely different industry to the one that they currently work in. Solent Partners Chair, Rachael Randall, says:
“Whether it’s food, fashion, beauty, healthcare, sustainable tech, transport or building aircraft for the future, this is your chance to find out more about the fantastic careers available on the Isle of Wight. “The Island has a vast number of business sectors based here, with many great job opportunities associated with them. Come and take a look at what’s on offer and speak to those working there about the skills that are required. “The Solent Careers Hub want to inspire the next generation of professionals and foster meaningful connections between jobseekers and local businesses through our ongoing programme of immersive experience days. “Open for Business on the Isle of Wight could be your first step to a new career!”
In addition to Red Funnel in East Cowes, and the Isle of Wight NHS Trust in Newport, doors will open at Vestas Offshore Wind Blades UK in Newport; GKN in East Cowes; the Isle of Wight Council in Newport; Teemill in East Cowes and UKSA maritime youth charity in Cowes. Beth Mansell, Career Development Facilitator at the Isle of Wight NHS Trust, has said:
“We are looking forward to taking part in Open for Business 2024, which is a real first for our Island community. Our talented colleagues will be showcasing the skills needed for a wide range of job roles within Health and Care, and they will support anyone who is exploring career opportunities in the sector to make an informed decision about their pathway.”
Richard White is Chair of the Island Careers Partnership (ICP), one of the founding partners of this Open Day event. ICP build links between education and business on the Island, to help create a better understanding of the diverse range of jobs available and the skills, characteristics and qualities needed. They look to find ways of building career aspirations from an early age, and help guide young people into the world of work. He said of the Open for Business event:
“We are so grateful to the businesses taking part and opening their doors both to young people, in order to enthuse them about potential career paths, and for those who would like to find out about alternative career options away from what they currently do. “Working collaboratively is at the heart of what the Island Careers Partnership is all about, and this input from various Isle of Wight-based organisations and businesses makes a huge difference to the future career and life choices of our young people. The Island is packed full of interesting jobs and sectors, and we need to ensure that when young people begin to make career choices, they don’t automatically look away from the innovative and interesting industries based here on the Isle of Wight.”
For those interested in taking part in Open for Business on the Isle of Wight, it is vital that they book as spaces are limited. All of the businesses and links to booking forms can be found on the Solent Partners website – https://bit.ly/3uGkTIY.

Ah, a career at Red Funnel! All the time off you like, turn in when you fancy, want a holiday – sure!
You want to work in maintenance? – sorry, no places there.
At least that’s what Red Funnel tell their passengers when no ferries run.
Show me a professional Company on the island,
from what I have experienced, all Companies are run by
Numpty’s.
and what do you do for a living, voice of reason ? or are you a benefit sponger
Got any jobs paying a grand a week for about 20 hour’s a week? Also need 10 weeks a year paid holiday. If not count me out as I am better of on benefits fraud.
Have you tried politics? Seems to work for Seely. Although you’d struggle to get benefits of 1k a week…most often £758 a month but good luck trying.
Ah, a career with Vestas. A company with annual staff turnover running at roughly 28% and has done for years. 4 days on and 4 days off in perpetuity. Management will tell you that equates to only 6 months per year. Taking into account that each shift is 12.25 hrs long it works out at approximately 56 weeks per year, based on a regular 40hr week. Add into that no bank holidays or special holidays and it’s actually a pretty shoddy deal. No night rate, no weekend enhancements soon take the polish off the deal. Don’t be fooled by the numbers kids. People leave in droves for a reason.
Staff turnover in manufacturing is always high. The shift pattern suits many people as the 4 days off are great. If you take into account your annual leave you work less than half the year. We work bank holidays, but you are guaranteed Christmas week off and there are forms of special leave in some circumstances.
On top of that you get a salary that is higher than most jobs without needing any experience or qualifications. You get free medical and dental insurance, paid annual leave, paid sickness, good opportunities to progress and gain skills, the opportunity to travel to Europe and beyond with work and many other perks. Oh, and Vestas have just announced all staff will be getting a bonus. People also stay in droves for a reason.
Don’t forget it’s a boys club, very cliquey, management bullying, blatant under reporting of accidents, near misses and general welfare concerns plus, for every blade produce tonnes and tonnes of non recyclable waste Not so green on balance. Lots of people are in a sort of reverse poverty trap. Can afford better accomodation, nice cars etc but now can’t afford to leave. In my time there I witnessed all kinds of bullying, risk taking, pilfering, blatant ignoring of genuine safety concern. To the point were disciplinary action was threatened for speaking up. I’m afraid the unspoken mantra is ‘Production is King’. All other concerns, welfare, safety, work life balance are at best secondary. Read the reviews on glassdoor.com
Oh,Billy. I guess you’re pretty new there. Still on your honeymoon. Come back in a few years when the love dust has faded. Unless of course you’re on a management trajectory. As they say, ‘ If your face fits, get it stuck right in that crack.’
Enjoy.
I’m not new.
Where is 28% annual staff turnover the norm? And also, what is being done to address that? It looks like if the problem is chronic it needs to be scrutinised.
Ditto the NHS, which accounts for 85% of advertised jobs on the gov’t website.
And all in service to a product which violates the rural landscape, chops up birdlife, produces minimal actual power and doesn’t biodegrade for thousands of years when eventually buried to continue leeching toxins deep into the aquifers.
Indeed. If it wasn’t for massive European and government subsidies and support non of this would happen. It doesn’t even have to work at all. It’s all part of the great ‘greenwash’. As long as governments can show they are doing something, the pressure is off. I’m not against turbines, solar or hydro/wave power but I am against massive employers scooping out the souls of their employees and trying to sugar coat the reality. I went in full of hope for the future, proud to be part of the solution but what an eye opener. It’s the worst job I’ve EVER had and I started work at 15 casting iron in a foundry. Ankle deep in sand and molten metal. That was hard and dangerous. This place is soul destroying.
I agree all governments are experts in ‘Greenwashing’, but have a look at the subsidies and support given to fossil fuel companies by governments if you think they’re supporting the wind industry.
Many staff have bad experiences at Vestas, same as with any company, but there are plenty of people who enjoy it and have done very well by working hard.
There are those who do very well out of the hard work of others. The professional loafers who gladly let their committed and dedicated colleagues do all the graft while they sit under the mold in little gangs watching memes on their phones. If you applied the Pareto metric you’d soon see that 80% of the graft is done by 20% of the workforce and the inverse is true of the repairs rate. 80% of the problems are with 20% of the process and from the lack of understanding and attention of the slackers, to the detail and the PWI. But as an operative it mustn’t be flagged for fear of reprisals from colleagues or higher command. It shouldn’t have to be like that but I guess the rot has set in.
I think you’ve been reading to much of the Daily Mail.
Too much. Not ‘to much’. Probably reading too much of the Sun or having it read to you.
Going to court and that’s his best clothes?
Should get a job, maybe then he can afford some Margiela or Kenzo
If you’re trying to be me then you need to be more brutal

I remember the comments on the last article being controversial, the pictures still make me lol however.
I’m just thinking what my drill sergeant would of thought of him turning up on his parade ground
Hmm – whilst they say you shouldn’t stereotype, however, when i first saw the image of him, I thought, I bet this individual has been charged with child offences – until I read the headline about an online adult worker – guess that proves that first impressions aren’t always correct.
He’s sad and lonely like me
Obviously not the full shilling.
Ok be honest, how many people looked up ‘Valentina_xox’?
I just did after reading your comment, nothing special even with beer goggles on.
This man will undoubtedly be back in the local news at some point soon, that’s a given.
Is wind in the willows missing a character?
Leprechaun
Clockwork Orange more like it.
Perhaps the best comment under these circumstances is no comment at all!
Although perfectly legal, I do question the public interest of showing a photo of the individual.
In what is a small and closed community, is this individual best served by preserving his anonymity and allowing him the the privacy to reflect on his actions without being subject to undue public ridicule.
Nah. Let the people throw their stones. They will have forgotten him by the end of the day.
Perhaps he your friend why you become defensive .just reading the comments he that spuid thinking or don’t know what he thinking that could of had a relationship. Defiantly bit odd. He resembles the James Bond protagonist in Goldfinger – ‘Odd Job’
Maybe all he ever wanted off the babestation slapper was a ‘hand job’.
