The most vulnerable residents on the Isle of Wight will start to receive the Pfizer/BioNtech COVID-19 vaccine within the next 24 to 48 hours, it has been confirmed by the NHS.
The roll out of the biggest vaccination programme in the NHS’ history is underway with GP surgeries set to take delivery of the vaccine later on today (Tuesday), with some kicking off their clinics this afternoon and the others starting clinics on Wednesday.
Carisbrooke Health Centre on the outskirts of Newport will be the first GP surgery on the Isle of Wight to offer the vaccine, kick starting lock vaccinations.
Nurses, paramedics, pharmacists and other NHS staff will work alongside GPs to vaccinate those aged 80 and over, as well as care home workers and residents, identified as priority groups for the life-saving vaccine.
The NHS will contact people in the priority groups when it is their turn to receive the vaccine and they will be invited to Carisbrooke in the first instance. A number of other vaccination centres will open over the next 10 days. People should not contact their surgeries – the vaccination service is available strictly by invitation only.

Dr Michele Legg, GP and clinical chair of NHS Isle of Wight Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), said:
“We are very proud that the island will be part of the vaccine rollout – this is such a hugely positive step forward to help us protect our community from the impact of coronavirus (COVID-19). The vaccine is safe, effective and our best protection against coronavirus.
“While this is an encouraging step, it doesn’t mean the impact of the virus is over. It is so important we keep doing all we can to protect ourselves and others by continuing to wash our hands, wear a face covering and make space when out and about.
“We want to ensure the vaccine is being offered first to those most at risk from coronavirus. We will contact you when it is your turn to have the vaccine. Please do bear with us and wait for us to contact you, so we can continue to support our patients.”
Alison Smith, managing director of NHS Isle of Wight CCG, added:
“I would like to say a huge thank you to all GP practice teams, our colleagues at the council and hospital trust, and everyone else who have been working together around the clock to bring the vaccine to the island.”
Reacting to the news, Bob Seely MP has said:
”We will see several vaccination centres appearing across the Island over the next ten days to ensure people can get vaccinated as quickly and efficiently as possible. I would stress that people should wait to be contacted rather than contacting their GP surgeries.
“I would like to thank the IW Council, IOW NHS Trust and all those who have worked so hard behind the scenes on the Island to get us to this point.
“I want also to thank in advance those who will be undertaking the mass vaccination programme.
“This is an important moment for the Island and the country. It is my hope that we will see most if not all Islanders vaccinated by the Spring.”

Lambs to the slaughter
Troll.
Yep.but luckily they wont have too deal with the unknown futre side affects later on
So that’s great yeah!? Means back to normal then!? Nope! Still wear masks ,still all restrictions, even after vaccine, so what’s the point of having it?? Oh yes, because you are told too, of course!! Think all this is going to stop because of a vaccine and a new year? Think again! It stops when YOU decide it stops!!
Thats such an uneducated moronic comment. Its great news and means that the older people on the island can get vaccinated and have a chance to live the remainder of their lives with some sort of protection against this virus. Its also a start on fighting back against it for the rest of us.
All those who still think this virus is fake should go and volunteer to work for the NHS in a Covid ward, if your so immune from it you would save the NHS a fortune in PPE. Idiots
Well said.
Who said virus is fake? I’ve never said that! So please get YOUR facts right! And the only one here that is uneducated is you! So dumb you believe everything matt halfcock says, because you cant think for yourself! Tim c. Wonder what the C stands for? I think we all know!
I never said you said that so YOU get your facts right. Something you seem to struggle with given that spout a complete load of rubbish.
“Mr justice” Back in march you were saying it was fake. Get your story straight first.
No I’ve never said fake, over blown yes , made to scare everyone by saying it’s a virus that will kill us all! Anyone that knows my posts I haven’t said it doesn’t exist!
Agree 100%
That`s ok…remember it was only 2 weeks to flatten the curve…the rest to flatten your resolve and intellect !
Well, we’ll be having the jab if only so our children and grandchildren can get their lives back to some sort of normal. Hopefully in the not to far future.
People need hope not your negativity.
Like my old mum used to say ‘ If you’re not prepared to help when help is needed you should keep your nose out and your gob shut’
What do you think I’m trying to do? Help open your eyes ,give you the other side of the coin , theres more to all this then what the media and liars (government) say.
Fear does strange things to a persons mind.
But All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.
By invitation only ?, Many older folk will miss the phone call, they don’t do that NHS text or Automated phone thing, so the most vunerable will miss out – how many times will surgeries have to keep calling – not many . Like winning a prize on a radio STN call, 5rings and you loose. But it is a start,we need to kill this virus before it mutates beyond destruction.
Maybe they will send a letter!
Doctors, nurses, care and medical staff, all on the front line, should have the vaccine first.
And 2 nurses already have had serious side effects…
They already had under lying allergy conditions so dont try scare mongering into your way of thinking.
No, they were not serious side affects. The two nurses have a history to reacting to the medium that carries the vaccine. They normally carry EpiPens because of their medical history. After getting the vaccine they developed a rash. After administering their medication the affects quickly diapered. If you get the flu jab you will be fine.
What is your end game here Real Islander? Why do you not want people to take the vaccine? Why do you want the pandemic to carry on longer? Why do you want to sacrifice vulnerable people?
“Diapered” They had to be put in nappies?
Source,? Please, thank you.
what about the people in lockdown indoors due to mobility or been connected to a machine will they send the nurse out like they did with the flu jab
My missus will not have it, rushed, untested and experimental, who trusts pfizer with their appalling track record and of course the tax payer foots the compensation bill.
she already has one prick so why risk another !!!
Well said Spike.
Sooner the better
Bring it on will ge there when called.
Best thing to happen since start of virus.
These people who mock this will regret it later.
Start the vaccine passport too!
Lol, don’t forget it won’t be a vaccination passport,it will be a freedom passport! Bet you can’t wait to be chipped like those fools in Sweden. Then in the future, you won’t have to think at all, you can be told when and where you can go! Well done! What a moron! Lol
