Newport resident Millie Williams was part of the 4-person Great Britain team that won a silver medal in the World Triathlon Championships in Montreal, Canada, on Sunday 26th June.
The former Cowes Academy student competed in the Mixed Team Relay in scorching hot temperatures. The relay consisted of 4 team members taking on a super-sprint triathlon in a boy/girl/boy/girl format.
Millie was selected for the anchor leg, and she brought Team GB home with a fast performance to win the silver medal just behind a strong Mexican team. She was the fastest GB lady home across all age groups in the relay.
An elated Millie said after the race:
“The feeling of winning silver at my first world championships is still sinking in, I am very proud of our team. I felt very emotional!”
Millie’s coach, Simon Pilcher of Vectis Academy – who travelled out with Millie and her mum – said:
“Millie learned so much from her racing this weekend. After coming down with a horrible sickness bug 2 days before the race, she really had to suck it up and put on her game face to get on the start line. To then go and compete hard and lay it all on the line when you’re only 80% fit takes huge courage.
“We went to these champs to be competitive; not just to make up the numbers, and she’s proven to herself what I already knew: that she can mix it with the top girls in her age group at a major event even not at her best. If she continues with the same attitude and work ethic, she’ll continue to get better. Millie deserves all the success she had at the weekend with those 2 fantastic performances.”
Ms Williams would like to thank the generosity of all those people and local businesses who supported her in her GoFundMe appeal, including the Garlic Farm – where she works – which also raised funds at a quiz night. Without this support, she would have found it very difficult to achieve her dream.
Millie also competed In Saturday’s Sprint triathlon in the 20-24 Age Group, which included the USA’s national champion. She finished in 10th place overall and 1st GB female, with automatic qualification for next year’s World Sprint Championships in Hamburg in June 2023.
