SECOND LOCKDOWN: ISLAND BACK INTO LOCKDOWN FROM THURSDAY ANNOUNCES PRIME MINISTER
Share on FacebookShare on X

The Isle of Wight will join the rest of the country in re-entering a period of lockdown from this coming Thursday until 2nd December, the Prime Minister has announced this evening (Saturday).

Pubs, restaurants and all non-essential shops, leisure and entertainment venues such as hairdressers, beauty salons and leisure centres must close from 00:01 on Thursday 5th November and will not be permitted to re-open until 2nd December – undoing all the hard work businesses have been putting in to get the doors back open in a COVID-secure way.

Families will not be allowed to mix inside except for childcare and other forms of support.

Article continues below this advertisement

Manufacturing and construction will be encouraged to keep going and takeaways will be allowed to remain open, as well as those offering a delivery and click & collect services. Workplaces where workers cannot work from home should stay open.

Schools, colleges and other educational establishments will remain open – one of the significant differences from this lockdown and the one experienced at the start of this year. Courts and Parliament will also stay open.

Outdoor exercise and recreation is being encouraged, but only with 1 other person when from another household. Private prayer in places of worship will be permitted.

Financially, it has been announced the furlough scheme will be extended throughout November but it is unclear what support will be in place for individuals and businesses not part of the furlough scheme.

Extension to the 4-week lockdown

It is entirely possible that the Island will stay under tight restrictions after 2nd December. In effect, the whole of England will fall under a Tier 4 level and after 2nd December each area will be adjusted to Tiers 1-3, depending on how serious the situation is in the local area.

Christmas will be different, the Prime Minister has said.

Press Leaks

News of the impending restrictions was leaked to the national press on Friday night, forcing Boris Johnson to bring forward the big announcement from Monday to today. Today’s dire news comes on the same day that the furlough scheme ends and mortgage holidays cease.

The announcement was due to be made at 16:00, then 17:00 but was pushed back to 18:30.

Lasting Impact

For Islanders, the impact may be less significant than earlier in the year with the summer season now long gone, but the decision to implement another lockdown will no doubt leave many wondering what was achieved in the first lockdown. It certainly raises the question of whether major events will be able to go ahead in 2021 at all.

The Isle of Wight remains one of the safest places in the country in terms of COVID infections and deaths. The total number of cases since the start of the pandemic is 637.

Island Echo will continue to report throughout the second lockdown, standing by our readers as we have done throughout the pandemic. We take our role as key workers seriously and will bring you all the latest updates in an accurate and proportionate way.

I think we all saw this coming. We have a moral duty to do what is being asked of us and protect the NHS so that the people who need to access it can. We have the chance to shut the stable door before the horse has bolted. Keep safe everyone. Clean hands, wear a mask and keep your distance.

no – we do not have a moral duty – no one does

perhaps if those at risk stayed indoors out of the way, then the rest of us could just get on with things and ignore this stupid virus. It has a 99.98% survival rate and most can just simply ignore it and carry on.

once again, it is the old people in charge, ruining it for the rest of us, whilst they continue to get their public sector wages and pensions, whilst the private sector is thrown under the bus.

all mp’s and scientists and anyone else demanding a lockdown, should have their income stopped and see how they like it.

Bet you’re an inconsiderate millennial ?.. let’s hope COVID doesn’t knock on your families door and take your mum, dad, granny, grandad ??? As for still getting public sector wages and pensions, they’ve earned it, so shut up and crawl back under your stone …

Edgreen – no they haven’t earned it – these leeches are sponging off the taxpayer whilst barking orders at others
the private sector earns their money and they are being told to stop trading by a bunch of deadbeats that will not be suffering financially.

personally – I will be out and about doing whatever I want – I am unconcerned by others – you are not my problem and neither is anyone else.

If you take the known figures from the Island, with 637 known infections, with 91 known deaths – you end up with a mortality rate of 14.2%. That seems extremely high.

If we take the overall estimate for the number of people who have been infected in the UK, we’re at about a million. That’d suggest that one in 66.6 people have been infected. If we use that as a figure, then it would suggest that about 2126 people on the Island have been infected on the basis that the Island’s population is 141,606 people. I suspect that the Island’s remoteness means that this figure is actually too high, but I don’t have anything better to work with.

Using that higher number of infections, then we see COVID-19 has a mortality rate of about 4.3%. Using those figures, we can say that the virus has already killed at least 1 in 24 people on the Island. That’s a rather sobering thought. I’d put it that people do indeed have a moral duty to protect each other.

More worrying OUGHT to be that Half of those entering the hospital here in Newport, left in a body bag.

50/50 ward is what it (the cv ward) is aptly know as in house.

Let us hope the ‘odds’ have improved a bit now with experience and different drugs.

Too much cash is wasted on mental health whilst medical issues go unchecked causing real, not perceived suffering.

No we don’t. Check your facts before believing this governments lies. NHS is overwhelmed EVERY year despite covid19. Should we lockdown every year then?

I do check my facts unlike you. The NHS is NOT overwhelmed every year. You’re talking rubbish. Please show me the news reports every year where they have to open emergency hospitals and cancel all appointments for months? In the last 10 years they have had at most 20,000 die from flu and colds. So far this year well over 40,000 from covid and looking to hit 100,000.

As for 40,000 dying from covid it is well known that if you have a positive corona test and you die within 28 days of your result it does not matter what you die of it will put down a covid death

I seen it coming, AND guessed the ‘timing’. Not hard. Like the main Summer Hol season, NO mention of growing cases, or masse testing, UNTIL the main season ended, then, guess what? Suddenly, and ‘surprisingly’ (not) numbers shot up. But by then tills had been filled.

So like now, with Christmas being a time of massive spending, HMG have ‘waited’ until the half term money making ‘Holiday’ is over, as, like with the Summer hols, they didn’t want to ‘scare off’ holiday makers, and now know that a ‘tight’ lockdown now, will mean it can be eased off, just at the right time for people to go out and spend in December.

This is NOT about ‘saving Christmas’ but about trying to save businesses, of which the failure will affect us all, be it lack of jobs, increases in stealth taxes, more unemployment and crime etc etc.

So don’t ‘blame’ the Gov, but they in this PC, wishy washy world can’t directly come out and speak the truth anymore, and as I find on here, many don’t ‘want’ the hear such anyway. So HMG have to ‘pretty’ it up, yet the actions and results are the same.

Many hair dressers, gardeners, tree surgeons, chippies, kitchen fitters, mechanics etc etc, have done very well out of this, by claiming furrlough AND still working on the sly.

Of course none will admit it on here, so you only hear the hard pressed honest ones, but trust me, plenty have made a fortune swindling HMG

None of these measures are unjust and people just simply need to follow them, we wouldn’t be in lockdown if those selfish muppets would of obeyed the guidelines. How True it is i dont know put i was told by a friend that they had read on their pad that people away on Holiday do not have to rush home they can stay & finish their Holiday then return home makes the lockdown a joke if its true that means the hotels they are staying in will still be open when others are forced to close sorry but Holiday makers should be made to go home on Weds even if they were due to stay till Friday or Saturday ive seen 8 coaches today all from the midlands & the north places that are in tier 3 lockdown so why are they down here in the first place

Another opportunity missed schools should also be locked down. Stats show a 50 fold increase in cases amongst secondary school students, the biggest increase is in the 18 to 40 year olds funny enough the age of parents of school kids, and from there spreading to grandparents.

I agree, kids spread all germs/viruses. This one is no different. ONS and many doctors have said it is being spread from them to their parents/wider families. So much talk about kids not getting as ill but think about those they then spread it to. Not to mention little thought or consideration for the staff at school. Some of whom I would assume are in the vulnerable group with no PPE or ability to social distance. Good old Boris!

The island’s numbers would have remained lower if coach holidays here had not been allowed in England like in Wales.
Five coaches here last week from higher Tier areas on the mainland.

If I need to shop I should wear a mask? I live alone, have no-one to run errands for me and need to shop as much as you and your family. However, as to wearing a mask? It’s not simple at all. I was abducted and sexually assaulted by a man who gagged me with a woolen scarf. At times , during this violation I could barely breathe.. So, you want me to wear a mask to buy my groceries? It’s all I can do to leave the house to go to the store. I beg you to have some compassion, you have no idea why the person not wearing a mask isn’t conforming to your idea of what’s right.

Wow, those big boys that bullied them in school will have to show some respect now, won’t they? I can see it now – ‘I’m sorry sir'(smirks and dribbles a little) ‘You’re only allowed 3 cans of beans’ Yeah, that’ll show ’em. And what will we do with these enforcers when they are no longer required? My imagination can’t cope with that scenario.

Why has Tom been voted down on his comment? Bloody Halloween, another stupid thing the UK has taken up from America. Halloween, or Old Hallows Eve as it was originally called, basically was linked to Devil Worship. Of course the kids don’t understand it, neither do the parents, it’s just an excuse to spend, spend, spend and shove loads of sweets and cakes into the kids mouths and on some cases, particularly more on the mainland, going door to door begging. If the older kids/teenagers don’t get anything they start damaging people’s property.

Halloween is a pre-christian event, we introduced it to many countries. Please, do some research before using your keyboard and pretty please, put your brain in gear before running your mouth.Halloween has nothing whatsoever to do with devil worship. It is an opportunity to honour the dead and remember their part in the evolution of life.Do you decorate a tree at christmas? Research why that is a tradition, from the same people who honoured their dead. Do some proper research mate or you will continue to be perceived as an ignorant, miserable old fool.

Why is the island with its very low infection rate being treated the same as a densely populated inner city area?

One size most definitely does not fit all.

People will die as a result of this lockdown and businesses will close for good destroying lives in the process.

National lockdown is not the only way to tackle the virus but it is by far the easiest to implement.

There are other ways to keep people safe without causing further suffering for those on the island.

Our low infection rate is a result of of low population density and the sensible attitude of the majority of the island’s residents.

This lockdown is just a kick in the teeth to all those who have worked hard to make their homes, schools and businesses as safe as possible. For many that will all be for nothing.

it doesn’t matter what colour people are, what nationality they are, what religion they follow.
the reason that the virus is raging in some areas of England Is because the people living there haven’t followed the guidelines. Plain and simple and it’s had a knock on affect for the rest of us.

They’re just trying to justify their pathetic handling of this virus.
I suggest everyone checks on the manufacturers website for the PCR test, where they state it’s not to be used for diagnosis of covid19 but only research purposes due to high inaccuracies.
Death rate is extremely low for this virus.

It seems all these numbers they thow up are all made up by mathematicians assuming.. Government says hospital are full, which in fact is a lie. Our NHS hospital here the other day only had ONE covid case… so how does their mathematicians and strategists answer that ?
A better lockdown would be tier 2 and up lockdown, and not allowed to move travel or visit outside their tier area..
Boris says Bars, Pubs and Restaurants to close Thursday at MIDNIGHT… thought they were already closed by 10 PM… does that mean Thursday Pubs can stay open till midnight ??

As construction can carry on, is there anyone actually having work done and letting construction workers into their homes?

Yes new builds should be safe to continue that’s a large portion of the construction industry and will save the government alot on furlough, but the work on existing properties, in people’s houses, is that classed as mixing households?

I just hope people don’t panic and stock pile on food etc again, after the supermarkets gained control of the panic buying, there has been no shortages and everyone can buy the food they need. Makes me sick that people can be so selfish and not think of others

I still cant understand why so many holidaymakers were aloud to come over .. the ferry companies should have been forced to restrict people without a good reason ( work deliveries or medical) from coming here .
