The Hurricanes’ 8-game unbeaten run ended on Saturday (12th April), despite a powerful first-half display against promotion-chasing Basingstoke at the Fairway.
Sandown & Shanklin RFC came into the contest in strong form and immediately set about imposing themselves, the scrum laying down an early marker. Jolliffe, Kulik and Skelley combined to devastating effect, earning 4 consecutive penalties and pinning Basingstoke deep.
That dominance soon told. Spotting space out wide, Jev Dry launched a superb miss pass to Rob Newton, who crossed for the opening try (7-0).
Basingstoke responded with composure, using their lineout platform and controlled phase play to stretch the Hurries’ defence before finishing out wide (7-5). Their forwards then took charge, driving over to edge ahead (7-10).
The home side reacted well. A slick backs move created the opening for Ant Burr, who timed his run to perfection to retake the lead (14-10).
With momentum swinging back, the Hurries upped the physical intensity. Strong carries from Sam Flux and Matthew Miselbach repeatedly dented the Basingstoke line, eventually creating the platform for Hugo Jolliffe to power over. The successful conversion extended the advantage heading into the interval.

Injuries disrupted the Hurries early in the 2nd half, and Basingstoke capitalised immediately. Their winger produced a moment of quality, beating several defenders to narrow the gap (21-15).
The visitors continued to build pressure, forcing the Hurries onto the back foot. Defensive efforts — led by WightFibre Man-of-the-Match Harry Miselbach — kept the contest alive, but Basingstoke struck twice in quick succession to turn the game around (21-27).
With 20 minutes remaining, the Hurries threw everything forward. Wave after wave of attack inside the Basingstoke 22 brought them within inches of a decisive score, only for resolute defence, held-up calls and a couple of costly knock-ons to deny them.
After a prolonged spell of pressure, one final knock-on ended the contest, bringing a frustrating close to an otherwise spirited display.

There was, however, reason to celebrate elsewhere for the club. The Hurries’ 2nd XV secured the Counties 5 title in impressive fashion, winning 16 of their 17 matches this season. Their consistency and strength throughout the campaign sees them promoted to Counties 4 — a significant achievement and a clear sign of the club’s growing depth.
