The Government has announced that human trials of a coronavirus vaccine will begin in the UK from Thursday.
If successful, it will be the first vaccine for the deadly COVID-19 virus which is killing thousands of people across the world. Locally, 14 people have died having tested positive for coronavirus.
The news comes on the same day that it is announced that key workers will be tested for the virus here on the Isle of Wight, saving an unnecessary journey to a regional testing site in Tipner, Portsmouth.
It is unclear at this stage if all key workers will be eligible for testing, such as journalists and shop keepers, or whether they will be reserved for frontline care staff.
73 people have now tested positive for COVID-19 on the Island, according to the latest figures released by Public Health England.
Matt Hancock, Health Secretary, has said that he is throwing all possible resources at Oxford University and Imperial College London as they make rapid progress in finding a vaccine. He said that getting to the human trial stage would normally take years.
