Firefighters turned out at the crack of dawn to rescue a horse that had been found on its side near Downend this morning (Wednesday).
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service were alerted at around 06:30 to reports of a horse on its side and down a bank in the vicinity of Burnt House Lane, between Downend and Shide.
Appliances from Newport and Shanklin – including the animal rescue unit – were mobilised.
Using specialist equipment from the animal rescue unit, crews were able to right the horse and move it from its position. A vet was called to the scene. The incident was brought to a close at around 08:00.

Didn’t the fire brigade say they attend incidents that are a concern for life? I’m not against them attending these sort of incidents, but please also attend when people’s properties are flooded
So nice that our fire service help animals as well as people in need. Thank you so much.
It’s always heartwarming to read these stories with a happy ending. Well done to the fire service and all those involved in the rescue. You are the unsung heroes!! Many of us quietly appreciate what you do.
I think we need a new word for real heroes doing heroic things.
Doing your job does not make you a hero.
It does if you are Superman.
Well done to everyone involved in the rescue. I hope the horse is OK.
