With coronavirus continuing to spread across the country, including within the prison system, HMP Isle of Wight has reassured Islanders that they are continuing to keep residents, staff and the wider public safe.
Parkhurst and Albany prisons are operating a nearly full regime at this time with only minor changes to day-to-day operations.
A spokesperson for the Newport-based prison has taken to Twitter to say:
“HMP IOW continues to operate and keep our staff, residents and the public safe.
“Our team are amazing and continue to work to serve the public”.

Couldn’t really care about the residents of prisons.
Lock them up 24/7 and feed them through the flap like the old days. They’ll be fine with their tvs, Xboxes , mobile phones , 3 hot meals a day and the drugs and booze.
Let’s hope that if the residents get sick they keep them in the prisons and not flood the hospitals with them – after all the prison has its own health care facilities and prison service nurses.
Idiot
They are still people
no they aren’t – they are scumbags that have been sentenced to jail for sex crimes – they gave up their right to be treated as a human, when they decided to ignore the rights of their victims.
Let the filth suffer.
The residents getting sick – means staff get sick.. don’t have flaps on doors – Booze ?
Ill informed
HMP IOW continues to operate and keep our staff, residents and the public safe.
………..
They are not “residents” – those in albany are dirty scumbag nonces, who are prisoners, inmates or nothing more than a number, which is more than they deserve.
Lock them up and leave them to starve to death in a pile of their own excrement – a fitting end, to pathetic lives.
What if you are an OAP in there for not paying your bills
With both sites at HMP IOW being dirty sex offenders who should be put down instead of tax payers footing the bill to feed clothe and give TV games etc, it would be a shame if a member of staff were to pass on the virus and reduce the 1000+ rapists to zero, I am sure the home office would be happy as it would reduce overcrowding
There are innocent men too who have been wrongly convicted who don’t deserve to either be in prison or be infected with the Coronavirus.
I didn’t meet many innocent prisoners.. if the virus did get in, lots would die.. not a bad thing then.
My concern is for the Prison staff that have to look after these prisoners, be they Nounces, Perverts or Rapists. I hope the Prison authorities are supplying the correct IPE for all their staff ?
But, somehow I doubt it !
Whether we like to admit it or not, there are over 1,000 people living in a closed community within HMP IW. Their punishment is deprivation of liberty for a fixed period of time according to our law. They do not pose a risk to the community in fact their confinement contributes considerably to the economy of the Island.
The Criminal Justice Dept. is responsible for maintaining good order and places little demand on IW public resources; quite the contrary.
Using prisoners as a focus for our fears is easy. Tackling the current crisis in a way that protects our population demands an understanding of the real issues and the need to work together.
Let’s not look for scapegoats. Instead let’s become more community focussed; don’t panic buy, look out for our near neighbours, especially the elderly and carers. Be mindful of the families with children and the stress of close confinement.
The response to fear is “fight or flight”. We cannot escape and we must resist the temptation to lash out.
@barry –
Those scumbags in that jail deserve nothing and if there aren’t officers to provide them with food, then tough, they starve – their fault for being perverts. No sympathy for those dirty scummy nonces at all.
The simpler solution is to take them out back and shoot the lot of them. Saves the resources and reduces pressure on the officers.
We will be looking after ourselves and making sure we are alright – those lot in that jail can rot.
You forget about us staff who go in there everyday putting our lives at risk to keep you safe….Its sad that narrow minded blinkered people like you make this country bitter and twisted, now go and get educated please.
One day, You or someone you know and love could be falsely accused and wrongfully convicted by someone they may or may not have known 30 or 40 years ago. How can a man prove that he didn’t do what he is accused of? False accusers – and they are ou there – only have to lift the phone these days and they will be believed from the outset. They don’t have to prove anything. They can rely purely on hearsay evidence in court and the accused is, contrary to what many believe to be the foundation of our justice system, considered guilty until proven otherwise! I’m not saying they’re all innocent, of course they’re not, but it’s time society realised that a substantial number of men have been locked up for something the simply haven’t done!!! Most of them are elderly and some are in poor health. Instead of your disgraceful comments just be thankful that it’s not your husband, father, grandfather etc. And start praying that it never is!
those that are elderly and in poor health, are usually the ones that have been in the jail for years or have finally been caught after a life time offending.
@not given – do not justify soft soap treatment of vile scum – they get what they so richly deserve.
courts do not lock people up on hearsay – they use “beyond reasonable doubt” as a benchmark – everything must meet that benchmark to be considered “on solid ground” for a decision. In old cases where there is no evidence, they work backwards and look at “balance of probabilities” and a whole host of other criteria and variables to build a picture of the person being accused.
Judging by your comments, I would say someone you know is banged up and denying it.
There’s plenty of jealous accusers out there especially x wifes/x partners, especially if x husband is happy in a new relationship. Also, lots of money involved, especially when trying to get his property as he is inside after all! But it was left to him in the divorce!! You’d of thought 2 lots of 70k would suffice! Not forgetting lies in court, WITH EVIDENCE, BIG LIES. Thank God for Appeals.
@Not applicable – yes and the individuals in the legal system know this – they aren’t stupid – they are people after all, that entered a profession after going to the same schools as some of the people they see in court.
Can not believe some of these comments.
What about the officers who are working every day keeping them locked up!!!
Most all have family and children waiting for them to come home!!
Well said.
Some of these comments are mental if you agree with it or not the at the isle of wight prisons and other prisons through out the country are in a tough and dangerous job these personal make sure the offenders or what ever you want to call them do not escape from prison … you keep someone looked up they’ll come out fighting … these stuff do a tough and remarkable job and because of these jobs they can spend time with families there children will still have to go to school at these difficult times … some prisoners will have luxury of ps2 tele and items like that but they will only have phones and drugs due to corruption with in staff trying to be greedy or people outside smuggling them in through visits and parcels …
So how do you keep staff including their families when they go home and cons safe by still allowing visits and use of gymnasium going when gyms are shut to the Public and care homes can have no visitors. Why are convicted and sentenced sex offenders still allowed visits and use of gymnasium?
