Islanders are being warned by the Met Office of high temperatures in the coming days as a Level 2 heatwave warning is issued for the South coast.
The highest temperatures are likely on Friday then a very humid night to follow. Heavy thunderstorms in eastern areas on Saturday will lead to slightly lower maximum temperatures, but it will still be very humid.
While we welcome the fine weather, such heat can cause problems for the elderly, people with certain health conditions and very young children. Should the heatwave warning increase to Level 3, those who are not classed as vulnerable could suffer also.
The Isle of Wight’s Public Health team has some advice for staying sun safe:
- Look out for others especially vulnerable groups such as older people, young children and babies and those with serious illnesses
- Try to keep out of the sun between 11:00 to 15:00
- Apply sunscreen of at least SPF15 with UVA protection
- Wear UV sunglasses, preferably wraparound, to reduce UV exposure to the eyes
- Wear light, loose-fitting cotton clothes, a hat and light scarf
- Drink lots of cool drinks
- Never leave anyone in a closed, parked vehicle, especially infants, young children or animals
