Another significant milestone in the growth of girls’ football on the Isle of Wight was reached over the weekend as the Wight Eagles U13 Development Team faced Ventnor U13 Girls in the U12 Mixed League.
This match not only showcased the skill and determination of young female footballers but also marked a breakthrough for female match officials. The game was officiated by 3 newly qualified female referees – Jen Langton as the main referee, with Edith Geary and Eden Szawiel running the line.
In a well-fought contest, Ventnor emerged as the eventual winners, but the real victory was for the continued development of girls’ football and officiating on the Island.
Phil Collinson, Manager, Wight Eagles U13s, said:
“This is a proud moment for the Isle of Wight football community.
“Seeing female referees taking charge of the game is a fantastic step forward for equality and inclusion in the sport.”
With the growth of girls’ football on the Isle of Wight continuing at an exciting pace, this match serves as another testament to the hard work and dedication of players, coaches, and officials striving to make the game more inclusive for all.
