A £60,000 fundraising campaign has been launched to restore operations at Calbourne Water Mill after a ‘tragic accident’ saw a large pinwheel shatter.
The Mill, which was first mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, has been in constant operation but it is now feared that it will ‘disintegrate, fall into disrepair and disappear’ if the wheel, which was cast in 1881, isn’t repaired.
The circumstances of the tragic accident remain unclear but it is understood that no-one was hurt.
As previously reported by Island Echo, the Mill recently partnered with Portsmouth University and an event to celebrate was held last Friday (31st March). However, a fundraising page was set up later that day following the accident and has already raised £1000 of the £60,000 target.
Island Echo has approached Calbourne Water Mill for comment but has received no response at the time of publication.

Is the mill a charity? I thought it was a business???
as you will have noted – that mill has been in operation for over 900 years, however, within one day of partnering with a university, which is full of woke hand wringers, it managed to get damaged whilst they were having a celebration.
this should be enough of a warning – i bet the university said – try and get people to pay for it – after all, that is what universities are good at – leeching off others and then preaching their virtues, whilst wrecking businesses because of it, with unwanted red tape.
I don’t understand why they are not funding this themselves!
They charge to go in to this attraction.
Everything eventually needs replacing and people should factor this in to their charges?
I don’t get it.
Surely it’s a basic requirement to insure the building and all the workings etc inside it against accidental damage?
What about British Heritage at 1000 plus year old shouldn’t there be able to help
